Apperantly you were trying to go to a land which, for some reason, is attractive to you.
You know, the civil war and stuff are realy getting people to live in Skyrims.
While trying to cross the border, to join the land of happiness, spotted Ulfric and his army versus the Imperials, fighting on the borders of Skyrim, The Imperials win for some reason, capture ulfric alive,
asseen he didn't want to die fighting. Once the battle is over, they spot you, apperantly notice you aren't from the lands of Skyrim and capture you alive, because entering Skyrim is illigal.
Later that night, while the Imperials set up their camp, to rest for the ride to Helgen, a sneaky thief tries to steal the horses, fails, gets captured and you have a new friend.
Then, they strip off your clothes as well for the horse's thief clothes, while they let ulfric and his guard keep their clothes, put you in a wagon, with handcuffs only, with guards infront of the wagon.
Because surely noone is going to hop off the cart, right? there is noone guarding it and you still have your feet...
Then you have a long conversation with people looking at you, naming random places and lots of divines and gods, which don't mean anything to you...
Once you enter Helgen, the Emperor and the Thalmor came from the far north to witness the spectacle, though they could've never gotting there in time.
You get to the chopping block for execution and then Aldiun, the world eater shows up, saving the dragonborn, which he will regret.
Thats the beginning and the unexplained logic behind it.
I must say, this is probaly one of the most confusing, unlogical parts of the game.
