Just started Skyrim again. Have a question!

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 8:11 pm

So I recently started playing Skyrim again. I will admit I am a novice Elder Scrolls player. Probably why I didn't give it a good shot when I bought it on release day. Don't get me wrong I love the game but I am one of those who starts a toon, gets to lvl 10 or 11 and starts over, so I never get anywhere! I am currently playing my first Orc character and love it. He's a warrior obviously, 1 handed weapons and his shield are his tools of choice. Heavy armor and smithing are his second love. Currently a lvl 11. Here comes my question.....

I've done a few side quests, cleared a mine or 2, got to lvl 11 and now I'm currently trying to make my way to see the grey beards and I am getting 3 and 4 hit by ice cats and ice troll. I placed my perks mostly in 1h, block, some heavy armor, and 1 smithing. Did I do something wrong? I feel like I should be able to hold my own a bit better! I'm thinking of starting over but with a similar character. Any advice people have would be great. Thanks!

You're not doing anything wrong, Skyrim's kind of ludicrously easy - you're just running into monsters that way outlevel you.

Advice: keep going. Bring health potions. I was getting almost two shotted by the ice troll on the way up when I started, however now (level 43) that ice troll doesn't stand a chance against me.

No, Ice Trolls are some of the more dangerous foes in Skyrim, even at higher levels, and the Sabre Tooth Tigers can be pretty hairy too. At lvl. 11 you're gonna have a real problem against both of those. The cat you should be able to take out, but you might have a better chance going around the troll.

With the sword and shield combo my best advice is to bash then hit, rinse and repeat until enemy is dead. The bash staggers them for a short while, but long enough for you to get a hit in and bash them again. That way you at least prevent them from attacking, providing you have the stamina.

Looks like you have reached one of the very few places that does not appear to be scaled to the player level and that is why you are not finding it extremely easy, try sneaking past or just sprinting past it.

You're not doing anything wrong. That Ice Troll is there for a perfectly good reason - they want you to start the Main storyline *later*. I generally do ALL of the side factions first (thieves, companions, mages, DB), but that's not necessary. Doing some of the companions quests would probably help you out a great deal (both in the form of getting you some training with your primary skills, as well as simply gaining levels to get that pesky troll out of the way). If you'd rather do the main storyline first, then by all means - do it. These games are all about doing it the way YOU want.

Just take some potions ;)

i find the game pretty hard, but on xbox im playing on master and i am an ice artificer. Nords, most creatures up north and vamps all have high ice resist so. Its srta my fault for my build.

Master's pretty hard up 'til about level 20, then I need mods to keep it challenging.

Yeah with the Ice Mage thing going for you, you did it the hard way. Lightning helps. But fire is basically the cure-all.

Indeed...depending on what type of character, it can stay challenging up until like level 30-40....But for the most part by that point you've pretty much mastered the art of "OH [censored], FUSRODAH" and running away.

Unless you're an archer. Then pretty much all you ever do is loot dead bodies. :)

I've never played an archer before. Thought about starting a wood elf archer with 1h secondary to see if I liked it.

It's all about play-style really. I find it hard to not be a stealth-based character, but you know.

If you DO make an archer style character, might I suggest getting smithing and enchanting all the way up? Being able to craft your own daedric (soon to be dragon-bone) bows, improve them to legendary, and then enchant them with two enchantments makes you pretty darn formidable.

but you might have a better chance going around the troll.

Yep, at lower levels the troll is a real problem.

However in my experience he is not that hard to get around, you might get hit once or twice in the process but just make sure your health is at full strength before you get to that point and then sprint by him as fast as your legs can take you. Once you get a decent lead it's possible to run all the way up to your destination without him ever giving you any more problems. OTOH he will probably still be there when you go back down, lol.

For a real treat, and to avoid another confrontation on the way down the mountain, run around the troll and keep running but do not run so far ahead that you get out of range and he loses interest. Make sure he follows you all the way up to the Greybeards' crib. Enter High Hrothgar then as soon as the interior loads, RUN towards the back of the place. Then turn around and enjoy the show. :D

Frost trolls are easy to avoid, snowy sabre cats on the other hand are much faster than the player, they are more of a threat than the frost troll.

Trolls have predictable swing patterns, along with a huge fire weakness. Cats are unavoidable, hard hitting and very difficult to dodge. Especially the snowy sabre cat, the strongest of the cats.

OP - If you're not confident enough to tackle either, I'd suggest running, use the terrain (rocks, elevated land etc) to avoid both of them.
