Potions and Alchemy

Post » Sun Jul 15, 2012 8:52 pm

I remember when I first started playing skyrim I used to snatch up every ingredient and make as many potions as possible then one day I realized making them is boring and there are so many to be found that there really is no point in even making them to begin with. I see a lot of people on here saying how great using alchemy is and I just do not see how stopping in the middle of combat and downing 10 potions can be any fun.

They're not talking about health potions being the good part of alchemy...there are a TON of effects that you can make potions out of...some of which GREATLY benefit you and the things you do. Not to mention poisons.

Some poisons, along with a certain pick pocketing perk can be VERY entertaining :)

Yea I know about poisons and skill raising potions being very benificial but then I go back to the part where you have to stup the game just to equip them. To me it ruins immersion and the only ones I see acually being useful are the lovelock ones but overall I feel alchemy is useless.

I make a few potions for my benefit (mostly kept for emergencies), but primarily I sell the things. Preferably the ones with multiple effects that include things like Regenerate Magicka, Regen Health, Invisibility, or Fortify Carry Weight. Once you know what does what, Alchemy is a source of virtually bottomless income: buy 500 septims worth of ingredients, and use them to make 10,000+ septims worth of potions. the chief rule I follow is that I won't combine positive and negative effects, because I think the potion valuation system is broken.

Smithing is almost as good, but harder at lower levels because the raw materials used to make stuff often cost you more than the finished product. I could make a character who doesn't smith, but I won't do without alchemy.

You can hotkey potions. I think many archers do this for their poisons. You don't stop the game if you use hotkey.

TBH I never remember to use any potions besides Health and Magicka and Stamina. Occasionally I'll use a fortify carry, but I never use any regen potion, or poisons.

I never remember that I have shouts either, unless something uses a shout, usually a Dragur, and then I'm usually like "oh yeah, shouts".

Shouts are, in a sense, a way to triple-wield. You can equip weapons in both hands (or a weapon in one and Restoration with the other), and use your Shout as a distance attack. It takes some time to get used to, but it's a fairly versatile system.

For me I never really sell much and the only real money I get is from gold I find in treasure chest or from a dead body. And I only ever smith leather armor from the hides I get from killing dear and wolves. So for me it is easier to stick with smithing than alchemy. Even though I could make more money from what you say I would rather not go through a complicated grind like that.

If you're into role-playing, being an alchemist is kinda fun ^_^

Well I'm a Necromancer / Alchemist.

Not to mention, you make plenty of septims from it.

Yea that is true. I prefer to RP more warrior type builds. Even when I tried a legit RP with alchemy I just never became that interesred in seeing it out too long.

It's just like real life. Some people are happy being a janitor. Not everyone wants to become a rocket scientist or a doctor.

I enjoy alchemy, it provides a nice change of pace from the normal day to day dungeon grind.
