New player to Skyrim for the PC

Post » Mon Jul 16, 2012 6:29 am

The HD texture pack is free and you can turn it on or off at will before launching Skyrim. It does make the game look slightly better but at the cost of performance as expected. I personally do not use the official HD texture pack because there are some graphical problems with it such as missing textures.

Hi,

How would I switch it off if I wanted to?

I've been playing the game for a couple of hours now. It looks amazing on the pc I'm running in my signature. Really nice detail
I can only play on medium with some performance enhancers. If you ever need to use them, I'll link to them for ya right now.

Even if you can run on Ultra, still recommend using these since it makes the game so much more smoother in controls. The controls were extremely laggy for me before I used these svckers.

When you start the game, choose Data Files and unselect the pack.

The Optimizer one is a bit confusing to figure out, so be sure to read the directions and just click on the program that mod adds(It is a perfectly virus-free program) and follow the instructions throughout. The Performance Plus stuff is much easier to install.

When you start getting to mods, I'd recommend learning how to install manually. Even with the advent of not including readmes with downloaded mods(I hate this...) it is still a good idea to learn this so you can figure out what could be causing conflicts much more efficiently. I have had so many Morrowind Mod issues that I was able to solve just by looking around the files. I use over 100 Morrowind Mods, as well. I don't get many problems thanks to knowing how to manage more than just the .esp and .esm files.

Besides, some mods work better when manually installed.

Here is also a bunch of other mods that make the game look a tad better without sacrificing performance or changing gameplay

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/679
Bump Roads Vanilla V1
Enhanced Distant Terrain (slight frame rate drop, although not much)
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/2356
Real Glaciers V2
Realistic lighting with customization (note, this makes it dark enough in caves that you will actually need a torch, so it technically changes gameplay, just letting u know)
Realistic Water Textures

You will have to look these up on the Nexus

You might want to try playing the game vanilla first.

Some people on these forums will swear blind that X and Y are broken but that's not always the case. You should play and decide for yourself first before installing any mods.

Make sure to make http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1322514 your .ini file too.

I've downloaded the Nexus Mod Manager and installed The performance plus mod. However when I click the plugin tab its not displaying the performance plus mod in the list on the left hand side. Should it be there? The mod is ticked under the mods page.

Never used the Mod Manager despite having it installed. Let me redownload the stuff to see what the files have so I can give proper advice.

Thanks,

I followed the video guide on how to use it and I think I've done it correctly. The manager made a chime sound and said the mod was installed. The mod isn't appearing under the plugin tab though. Which some mods did in the video guide.

Some will, some won't. You're all good. Someone else I'm sure can give you a detailed reason why this is.

The Performance Plus mods are mods that really just are retextures in the sense that you don't get any activation files. Just some files for textures. You might want to download it manually. Just use the main files on the file tab of the mod page for the mod. Be sure to read the instructions. I'd recommend just not using mods until you have more understanding of them, but if the game is laggy, just manually install before you use the mod manager so you can see what the mod files are. If the United Kingdom has any laws that make you have a limit to the files you can download a day or something, then I don't know what to say. I live in America.

Checked to see if your country has a bandwidth limit. It seems it does. Anyways, manually download each of the main files for Performance Plus and put the textures in the data file for Skyrim.

Edit: The grammar in my post is messed up... Heh. Sorry.

I just installed the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19023 mod and it seems fine working with the game :)

I'm going to focus on playing now and research more on the mods at a later time.

Thanks all :)

Welcome to Skyrim! Been playing since Morrowind myself, joined these forums when Morrowind came out actually lol.

Dazza, a mod you should download for sure is Skyui. It's the most popular mod out there I'm sure, just makes the inventory, and other game menus MUCH easier to navigate. Try it out :)

Am I correct in thinking that the files from the performance plus mod have to replace the files contained in the Skyrim folder? Like overwriting them?

modding, by definition, either adds to the files or rewrites them slightly.

The game doesn't have the files of the in-game stuff shown in the data files and doesn't seem like it would anyways. You won't overwrite the game's files. In fact, you are just adding new files to the folder.

That's what I thought :) I'm not that much of a mod type person and have done very little of it on PC games. lol
