Creation Kit unable to load the Dawnguard .ESM

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:36 am

After i downloaded dawnguard and tried to load the Skyrim and Dawnguard esm in the CK i keep getting these two errors and a crash this also happens when i try loading the Skyrim,Update,and Dawnguard esms.

Error 1:

Assertion

Assert

File: C:\_Skyrim\Code\TESV\TES Shared\misc/BGSLocalizedString.cpp

Line: 1566
LOCALIZATION: Error opening or reading strings file.

Error 2:

Warning

MASTERFILE: LOCALIZATION: Zero entries or empty block size read from strings file STRINGS/Dawnguard_ENGLISH.STRINGS. Strings will be missing.

After those two errors the creation kit always stops working. Im hoping someone can please shed some light on this problem. I tried looking for a way to re-download Dawnguard from steam but have found no such method yet. I already had to wait over a month for Dawnguard. Im gonna be pretty ticked off if i cant mod it as well.

Try
sResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - Voicesixtra.bsa, Update.bsa, Dawnguard.bsa
? Worked for me.

Hmmm... You're sure you saved the edit(s)? If all else fails, you can extract the BSA, then manually add the string files to Data\Strings.

yeah i made sure i saved the edits. I checked again just now and they are still saved. Exactly what files do I need to extract and add to the Data/Strings folder?

Where is your Update.bsa?

It should read as...

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
SArchiveList=Skyrim - Textures.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes.bsa, Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa, Skyrim - Voicesixtra.bsa, Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Update.bsa
SInvalidationFile=ArchiveInvalidation.txt
iRetainFilenameOffsetTable=1
iRetainFilenameStringTable=1
iRetainDirectoryStringTable=1
bCheckRuntimeCollisions=0
bUseArchives=1
SResourceArchiveList=Skyrim - Textures.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes.bsa, Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa, Skyrim - Voicesixtra.bsa
SResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Update.bsa, Dawnguard.bsa

EDIT : Are you sure you have the space after the comma?

EDIT 2 :

I'm not so sure I would do that. Adding anything to the Data folder, should be done with a mod manager. Besides, just doing that has been reported to not yield the same results as adding the bsa file. It seems that the CK will not recognize structures if only adding the string files.

I was looking in the wrong .ini. :facepalm: thanks to both of you for the help. It works fine now. the file I was editing was one of the text files found in 'my documents' (not sure if those are .ini as well). The one i should have been looking as was the actual .ini in the SKYRIM folder. I try not to go into those text files because I may change something important and not know it (knowing my luck). Thanks again to both of you.
