Opinions about V.A.T.S.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:25 pm

I like the V.A.T.S system....it just needs to be toned down.
I have recently been playing fallout 3 again trying not to use VATS,and it was enjoyable...i used alot more ammo up,but i did'nt mind it at all.
I like both ways of playing now....and i still use VATS every now & then, sometimes if i'm out numbered & sometimes for the cinamatic kills.
In my opinion it just needs more ideas for it to be toned down...but it's still a good thing in the game.
There could be many different ideas to tone it down....i did a topic called "V.A.T.S" a while back with ideas for this, but i cant find it.
Not all ideas are good ,but alot of people on this forum have great ideas. :)

Show him this and let him post what he thinks using your account.

But he'd get banned for account sharing! :ahhh:

Seriously, though, I support this idea.

It's basically a glorified pause mode, there's nothing tactical about it

i dont play MW2, however i have played GOW2 and Mass Effect 2 and the enemies were not nearly as fast and quick as the enemies in fallout, fallout has loads of extremely quick enemies, mass effect and gears of war are shooter games with pretty smooth combat mechanics and it doens't take several clips of ammo to take enemies down, like i said before anyway, in fallout it's not about a persons reflexes and speed, its about our characters skill, some people will continute to look at fallout as a shooter game, it has some shooter elements, and how many pure shooter games does it take 2 or 3 clips of ammo to take an enemy down ? not any i played, mass effect 2 enemies didn't take nearly that much ammo to kill, a few shots and thats it, same with gears of war, so it would be way too messed up to play the game entitrely out of VATS, i use a combintation, sometimes its more efficient to use VAT's and sometimes it more efficient to go outside of VATS, but when several very fast moving enemies are around me like supermutants or ghouls i'll definately use VATS, the faster the enemies move, the morely likely i'm going to VAT's.

You have a strange view on what's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwkhHoL4TAA.

And more over, Fallout 3 enemies aren't any faster than your basic shooter enemies. Try Serious Sam or Stalker for example.

It should be a power-up rather than something that can be abused. VATS is like a "get-out-of-jail-free" card in Fallout 3. In trouble? Aim for the head.

I think VATS should work like as soon as you go into it, you get to pick where you want to shoot for the AP you have, like it is currently, but when you've fired your rounds, it's the enemy's turn, still in that cinematic effect, he's picking what body parts he want to shoot on you. He'd take percentage chance of hit, DT and the effectiveness of his weapon in consideration and use up all of his AP. You have no 90% damage reduction in VATS either, so on your next turn you maybe only have half of your HP's left so you can shoot up a stimpak for an AP cost, then you maybe have a few AP left for another shot or you pass. You can also go into your inventory/use hotkey to switch weapon and switch ammo for an AP cost. In my opinion, this would be the closest to the older Fallouts. Only thing is that you can't change your position unless you exit VATS and do so in Real Time.

Oh, and if there are several enemies, aswell as if you have companions, they will also do their turns! People who are neither friendly nor hostile (civilians in the settlement where the fight might take place) aka fleeing people will not participate in VATS like they did in the original Fallouts. That was extremly annoying to watch five guys spending the round running away. If an enemy starts to flee, he won't participate in attacking in VATS, but you can still shoot him in the back!

Edit: To answer the poll - it's real-time with pause.

I used VATS all the time in Fallout 3. I didn't really appreciate the invulnerability, but otherwise, it made the game pretty fun. Honestly, real time combat kind of svcked when the enemy was actually engaging you. Some enemies would always run around in quick strange patterns and it made real time shooting not worth it. It looks a lot better this time around though.

i agree nate, all they need to do is adjust VATS so you take more damage while in it, but apart form that i like it, it enhances the game, FPS etc, the enemies don't usually move nearly as quickly as they do in fallout, the enemies is fallout are really fast, even raiders and the enclave are really quixk on their feet, combine that with how much ammo it takes to take down enemies in the game, its just not a FPS like some people think it is. FPS games the enemies go down with far less firepower than in fallout. so its not "cheating" to use VATS like some people insist.

You really overestimate the speed, west. You make it sound like the enemies in Fallout 3 are some sort of half-ass armored road runners never before seen in games.

Anyways, in a nutshell, VATS need is bonuses cut down, but to be reattainable (to a certain sensible degree) through perks. In my humble opinion.

Okay, so here's the thing: You're using Gears of War 2 and Mass Effect 2 as comparison. The problem with this is quite evident; they are not FPS games and they make heavy use of a cover system. In games with a cover system, enemies tend to stay behind cover, so they don't need to be fast. they just pop up and down and you have some a game whack-a-mole until a charging enemy comes along. The charging enemy in purposefully made slow because they know that he'd wreck your [censored] if they made him fast. Also, the enemies tend to always be straight in your face and you tend to always be going forward. In FPS games this doesn't matter since you're usually on the move, so if an enemy charges you just move back and out and come at the problem from a different angle. That, or you just kill him.

Also, I just realized you might be playing on a console...
