Light Switches...

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:15 pm

I remember months ago reading a fantastic yet very simple idea from a user on this forum
sadly the screen name escapes me and I apologize

His idea was if there could be light switches in New Vegas that you could turn on and off
in some buildings.

My opinion: Great idea

Your opinion:....?...

Not really, maybe in maintained houses, but electrics in abandoned houses would be shot.

its obviously doable (ive seen many f3 mods that add light switches) and Mafia 2 proves that developers can do it themselves.

I like it. What about the houses breaker box can you just replace the fuses if the house still has electricity running to it?

Would it work for xbox version?
I remember watching a TESIV gameplay video and when the guy playing it grabbed a piece of skeleton torso and held it up the lightning effects went through the cracks and it was just awesome.
But when I purchased it for the xbox it didn't leave that kind of a shadow, don't think it left any kind of shadow.

So I dunno if it would work for the xbox version.
But surely for the PC.

Meh. Six of one, half-dozen of the other to me. It'd be neat, but at the same time if it's not there I wouldn't miss it in the least.

Seems to me the most interesting potential it would have is for stealthy types- kill the lights, slip on the suppressor, and start taking quiet headshots at everyone in the room. :D

I think its a fun idea, I've put them all over the place in my own mod. It's nice because you can change the mood depending on your style of play. A sniper-type would likely enjoy having the lights out in some places, while Rambo-types will likely want it bright all the time. Who knows, but having the option is fun and adds some nice immersion to boost.

I wouldn't want light switches included if all they are going to do is turn the lights on and off. Now if NPCs and enemies react to it and it actually makes a difference in gameplay, like making sneaking easier or gunfire less accurate, then sure it would be a nice addition. Though if they included light switches with gameplay functionality they'd have to make lights that could be shot out too. And if world spaces reset every 3 days like in FO3, you might start wondering who keeps putting new light bulbs in those underground mine shafts twice a week . . . .

Speaking of - has there been any mention on enemy respawn times in New Vegas? Do "adventure sites" get reset still like in FO3, and if so, on what schedule?

I'd just love to have the option (especially in a subway station or something) to find the fuse box and power down all the lights. Then you could hear raiders and such going "What the hell..."

That's one thing I always wished was actually in F3.. when your roaming around some abandoned places there would be lights flickering about.. You could blow up the generators within the building yet the lights would stay on. I always wanted them to go out and then for the enemies to scramble into hiding positions or come to see why the generator blew out.

I think it'd be great with a high repair skill you could repair a houses breaker junction/generator and the lights would become functional and the house could be a findable home.

I don't see why not. I wouldn't really want it in the Capital Wasteland, except for a few buildings for the simple fact that there's no power plants functioning to generate electricity. But in New Vegas one of the pivotal things they're fighting for is electricity. It'd be a nice, yet subtle reference to the things we take for granted.

For instance [although I wasn't too thrilled by the movie adaptation], in "The Road" there's a scene where the kid is thrilled that he's got a bag of Cheetos and is tasting soda for the first time (though that was a separate scene), and it shows how in a scenario like that something that normally we would take for granted or even abhor, we would cherish when we finally had it. So I could definitely see it like that.

That said, I think it should have some tactical aspects. For instance if you turn off the lights, enemies may become suspicious, thinking someone is around, but perhaps later on just assuming that the power went out. And also to brighten up your house. But that's another story. :D

Just so it's tactical or I forget to turn off the lights in my house and run up an energy bill. House's goons come and try to collect the caps I owe and I have three options 1) pay 2) kill them 3) forced to do a quest for house.

Maybe that's why you were shot. You didn't pay your electric bill. :P

Sounds interesting, but I could definitely live without it. Lighting doesn't really matter that much, and as a general rule of thumb, if the enemy can't see you in the dark with your Pip-boy light blaring, lighting is not going to make much of a difference other than changing the atmosphere a bit.

If you can use it for tactics. I dunno if it should be actually light switches for each room or just a fuse box for the whole building. And NPC's should be like "who turned out the lights? I can't see [censored]!" and you'd get a great sneaking bonus when in darkness, and if you have the Night Vision perk you'd get an even better bonus. Combine that with "silenced" pistols and sneak melee kills.

Or you're just a pacifist and use the darkness to sneak passed the guards and avoid the loss of innocent lives.

I like the Idea of Light Switches. I would only want this if the characters are effected by the light being turened off. As in they can't see that well anymore. Or they might even wonder why the lights are on/off. Also if I shoot out a light I want the light to go out. I hate games where I can take out the light but it's still light.

it seems like itd be easy to do, but i think it could only be feasible in established towns (such as Primm or New Vegas), because out in the middle of nowhere wouldnt make any sense. even though Vegas escaped most of the bombs, it didnt COMPLETELY escape them. power grids are likely to be knocked out
