"Potions are cheats"? Seriously?! How do you survive

Internet tough guys are cool. Nothing's wrong with potions. I hate the interface, though.

I think the instant healing potions are a bad game mechanic. They're a huge advantage for the player. Imagine if the enemies had them too. I'm sure the player would be frustrated if enemies instantly healed back to full health in the middle of combat.

I installed a mod that removes instant healing effects from potions and makes only one healing potion effect at a time. Also I gave enemies potions too. Now it's fair.

Sounds suspiciously like another thing Morrowind (and maybe Oblivion?) did better than Skyrim.

Potions aren't cheats, they're part of the game. Something is only a cheat if it gives you an advantage that you weren't intended to have.

This is a symptom of outdated combat mechanics.

Hopefully by the next game, they will have implemented a working block/dodge system, and real time/interruptible potion drinking.

They need to stop screwing with working mechanincs.

We had block and dodge in Morrowind, it worked great.

In New Vegas when you turned hardcoe mode on your stimpacks (aka health potions in a serenge) healed over time,
and taking more than one extended the duration of heal - not the magnitude.

What you are looking for has already been done, all Beth has to do is not mess it up. But they did anyway.

I saw many times that bandits do drink potions. Never seen yellow glowing on them? And mages always cast heal spells on themselves. Well, not that often, of course.

That always frustrates me so much... But I guess I do the same thing so technically it's fair!

Imagine if they had as many potions as the player and healed instantly to full health after your every swing, just like the player.

The only problem I see with potions is the ability to drink them in a combat without interruption. Hell, even P&P, turn based rpgs have penalties for doing extra actions during a combat!

Phew, ok, I was worried that I was being a cheater. Still, I know I have to up my game and dodge better. Simply walking backward (to keep the enemy in view) as they hack away at me is NOT good combat tactics. If instead, I sprint toward them to their side, then turn faster than they do, I can strike. That works for Giants, at least.

Thanks for confirming.
Why were you worried of cheating in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME? You do whatever you want with it.

Only when exploiting the Alchemy system. That's cheating for me.

I rest my case.

Also, if you want to worry about a singleplayer game's balance, do so. It is perfectly legit. But don't do it for long, get to the PC, install some mods. Have fun!

Thankfully there's a mod for PC that makes them heal over time instead of instantly.

But nothing is "cheating" if it's in the game. Use smithing, alchemy, enchanting loop all you want to create a weapon that does over 9000 damage. It ain't cheating.

Easy to do that in PnP. No need for animations or AI.
I'd have preferred it if potions healed over time. No reason it couldn't have been done that way, it was how player created potions woirked in the previous games.
Still its not a cheat to use potions any more than it is to use enchantments or upgraded weapons.

It's become somewhat 'elitist' on this forum to play without any form of HUD, and role play in such a manner that you aren't able to smith, enchant, make potions, drink potions, run on the roads, fast travel or ride horses.
Ah, the forums ...

Well, it is always perfect pic behind their moniter. I wonder if someone can post a video of their own "elite" play through. Like everyone is a elite marksman in CS and in real world they cannot hit their target properly with just airsoft gun.

Regarding potions being "cheats"...

When you see someone say that you reply with this

I might not reply with that, but I think that. Potions are a part of the game not cheats.

If someone wants to avoid them that great, and if someone wants to use them that's great too.

But it's absurd to call them cheats. And actually it's insulting. Because who ever says that is calling people that use potions "cheaters" which is very offensive, in my opinion.

Make potion heal like the healing spell where you have to press and hold to recover health. Depends on the potion level, give different healing rate. Even nicer to receive extra damage while healing.

Oh what am i saying? Potion is being used like now in every classic RPG. If Beth make potion like my suggestion, there maybe some hardcoe RPG fans complain about it is not RPG.

Nothing wrong with potions. Using a potion is no more "cheating" than camping in a dark corner firing poison arrows at bandits

True, especially if -after 10 second- they resume their everyday activities with an arrow sticking out their head.

Breaking news! Slashing with your sword and casting spells are cheats, too!

The only way allowed to get past your enemies is headbutting them. And that without those nifty horned helmets (cheat!!).

lol!

however, i would love to be able to enable a hardcoe mode that turns off health regen and adds a potions over time feature.

I don't know if I could have put it so eloquently, but basically what he said. No matter how you play the game, someone somewhere will tell you it's wrong. Me? I like having potions. I like how the game isn't super challenging. I play games to *gasp* have fun! I know, blasphemy. If I want to get pissed off and want to break something I'll just go to work...or Walmart.

They could just implement them like KotoR did years ago, have a short animation of your guy drinking one.

Personally I don't use potions that often, not by choice, but I hoard them for the right time because they are one use.
