My problem with sword and board so far

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:21 pm

I have a battlemage-ish type character who uses sword, board, and summons. I find that combat kind of svcks because blocking takes away all my stamina so I cannot use power attacks. Any suggestions?

If you have it, that's the time where FUS RO DAH is at its best (any degree of it): stagger the opponent for just long enough to get a sliver of stamina. Power attack, normal, normal, BLOCK.

Also, if it doesn't transgress your character's limitations, a war axe is a little more satisfying of a feel for some reason.

Stamina potions? I think you lose less stamina when bashing someone rather than getting hit. Also seeing as your using magic, health and stamina your spending points in all 3 and thus wouldn't have a bigger stamina pool if you just used sword and board.

It's best not to use block when playing a battlemage like character.

Just use magic to pepper enemies before they get into melee range. If they do get close enough then finish them off with power attacks.

It sounds like you have a bit of a palomino character there bud, you may be spreading yourself a bit thin stats & perkwise? My experience on warrior has been to invest quite a bit into stamina upon level up, especially if you're wearing heavy armor.

Quite right. Powerattacks and shields bashing have a high stamina cost essentially making a blocking, powerattacking and magic wialding character rather weak for a long time. At much higher levels it can be a very strong build though.

With my sword+shield warrior, I save my stamina up for blocking+shield bashing and don't use power attacks. During the more difficult fights, where my warrior is blocking and using shield bashes often, stamina is frequently low and stamina potions are needed just so my warrior can keep up (300 health/220 stamina, lv 33). Being an alchemist helps with keeping a good supply of health and stamina potions on hand at all times.

I have yet to spend any one handed perks on anything but armsman.

It was fun playing as an Imperial battlemage in Oblivion, but I can't imagine having enough stamina for power attacks+blocking, magicka for spells and a reliable health pool if I was to be putting points into all three stats. I intended for my Nord in Skyrim to be a battlemage as well, but have since gone to using archery and alchemy instead of magic, in addition to sword+shield.

Skooma or fortify stanima equiptment. A lot of items I've come across have fortify stanima, and some quest items you get add a lot to your stanima. and if you ever see a drug dealer just kill him and you'll get like 3-4 skooma's.

you don't need to powerattack, when you can bash the enemy to death :(

The best way to keep stamina up for a battlemage is really to use the Respite perk in the Restoration tree, along with Regeneration for extra healing. As soon as there is a quiet moment or a brief lull in the combat you can cast Fast Healing / Close Wounds two or three times with your off hand to get your health and stamina back up to full and join in the fight!

I'm playing a magical warrior with not too much health so as to make the game a bit more exciting and user input based (also not using much armor). At nearing level 50 I have 300 health, 340 stamina, 250 magicka with all the fortifying enchants, and I find this to be a great balance for combat as I'm not incredibly sturdy but am very versatile, and am never limited by my stamina or magicka really.

There is an easy cure for this, though in my opinion it is a glitch. Beef stew, venison stew or vegetable soup. Or stamina regeneration potions. But IMO if you don't have all the stamina the move should fail. As it stands, you just need to up your regen.

Stew. No kidding. The stamina regen allows for a quick enough recovery. The design allows you to carry out an action if you have any stamina left... even if it's not enough to cover the cost of the act. So 1 stamina will allow you to do any action. With stamina regen you will have that 1 stamina back in the time the animation takes to carry it out. I agree with Mujo that this is borked, but it's part of the game we're playing.
