problem with verifing game cache

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:13 am

When responding to this please speak slowly and use small words as I am a computard....thanks. :)

So I started having problems with new vegas last week, kept getting corpses who were alive, live people who were corpses, npc who weren't where they were supossed to be....generally a bunch of wierdness that made the game unplayable. I thought, hey, maybe I should use steam to verify the game cache, make sure everything is okie dokie and all. It got 66% of the way done and said it found a bad file but it didn't download anything. I kept trying, and it kept getting to the same spot and kept not downloading anything even though it insisted it did. I have uninstalled multiple times since then. I have loaded from disk 3 times and let steam do it 4 times, and I have tried to uninstal and reinstall steam.....everytime I try to verify the game cache it gets to the same spot, with the same results....epic faliure....

Anyone have any suggestions? I would really like to finish the game but now I have crashes before I even finish the tutorial.

For some reason, any time New Vegas' files are verified, it will always come up with one file to download. I'm not sure what it is, I'm not sure why it does that, I'm also not sure what's causing your problems.

You're running with no mods, yes?

Nope, no mods for lil old me. It's too bad there seems to be nowhere else besides steam to download any patches from...I kinda miss the old days. :)

Does the problem persist on all new games that you start?

Yeah, but there are different things happening everytime. Like Sunny not telling me to go talk to the bartender after the tutorial, or the get meat for ncr mission and 2 of the people who they send ya to not having the dialog to complete the quest. Sometimes it is just like some random ncr guy that looks like an ash pile, but you can't loot him....if you sneak you can try to pickpocket him though....of course that never ends well. I kinda admit it is funny when I get to the snuff film victim and she is dancing there asking me if I like what I see....I guess I have a soft spot for undead hokers....:) I have only seen the dancing undead girl twice, mainly because I don't bother playing that far when it seems like it is not working. I have seen the meat quest borked probably 4-5 times, that one seems to be every time I have tried it since the last patch...before I never saw that.

I had to reinstall Civ5 since I uninstalled steam. It needed to download something when I verified it, but it actually downloaded something since it actually showed a download speed and a precentage... but the speed for new vegas files is always 0 and it is aways done instantly. Something is obviously not working right...no clue how to fix it though.

When the game verifier actually downloads files does it have a place where it stores temp files? Would deleting those files force it to actually get the files again? Does anyone know if this is indeed the case and where those files are stored and what they would look like? ( .ini .exe .hoseyourgame)

Any help would be/is apreciated....I would really like to be able to actually finish this version of the game at least once. :)

Go into your steam directory and look for a gamevalidation.log
THis file should tell you what file is failing to verify.
There is a common issue where 1 file will always fail to verify no matter what.
Its not game breaking just a verification thing. The file is installscript.vdf

Thanks, I see that file you are talking about.....unfortunately I don't see how that is gonna help me figure out how to make this game run properly. Something is obviously wrong with my install or the game in general and since I can't just reinstall the game and manually get the patch I have to rely on the cache verifer. The cache verifier won't get whatever file it keeps hanging up on, and won't check the rest of the files after, so, well, I guess that's that.

If it was just a matter of not being able to complete one of the earlier quests I mentioned then I guess it wouldn't be so bad. However, there seems to be some (for lack of a better term) corruption that takes place that just compounds to the point of making the game unplayable. I didn't wanna get to specific before since it is kinda game spoiling to me, but when you show up at Mr. house with the chip and there are no options to do anything with it it makes the game kinda pointless. Or if I go to do the yes man quests and everytime I go into the ultraluxe my game crashes it makes it kinda hard to finish that string. These problems always seem to start with something small like the meat quest I mentioned....sometimes as early as the tutorial. They then seem to just get worse and worse to where anytime you go through a random door you crash to desktop. Or you get to a npc and they don't have the dialog options needed to finish/continue a quest.

I understand Bethesda going to steam to combat pirates. I kinda even see who the way they and steam think this method of patching games is easier and will get people who know even less than myself about computers into thier game. At this point I am in a loop where I can't get the game to work though.

Oh well, thanks for trying to help. He he, guess I will go back outside and shovel more snow for entertainment.....at least till I have to get a patch for my shovel from steam :)

I've had this problem as well, it's damn annoying for sure. Except in my case I will get sound out of the left side or the right side, but never both at same time. I've updated every damn file I could think of reguarding drivers and such, So I followed Jasper's advise and here's what I got:

Starting validation of Fallout New Vegas
Validation failure: c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\InstallScript.vdf
Validation complete: 438 Total Files, 1 Failed Validation

The file it keeps hanging up on wont ever verify correctly. Its not a problem as i said before its a common issue.
If thats the only file you find in gamevalidation.log then dont worry about it.

Doo you play any other steam games? Do you play any other games other than civ5?
A dxdiag could help. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122570-how-to-dxdiag/

When you reinstall fallout are you making sure to delete the fallout directory? Including the save game directory? Excluding your actual save games.
Bear in mind this isnt official tech support. Refer to the link I posted earlier. You will find official tech support contact info.

Well, the file it hangs on is at 66% or so....it won't check past that so i have no idea if the rest is ok. I also play battlefield bad company2 and left for dead1/2....I don't have any problems with any of those games. When I have uninstalled I have done it from the control panel in windows7...I would assume that the folder is gone since it doesn't show up as a program to delete anymore....do i need to go through my computer afterwards and delete more? I have deleted my saved games a few times too, I didn't see a point in saving them if they were corupted and I play on hard, which isnt that hard anyways. I will try to run a dxdiag and post the results later if ya think that will help.

On a side note there were no patches for my snowshovel in steam which is a total bummer....I would really like them to make it work better......

Ok then.. Where does steam install the game? Because I do not see a bethesda folder. I downloaded the game to my computer, I didn't use a CD.

The game is installed in a subdirectory in the steam folder itself. It will look something like this -> C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\falloutdirectory

What kind of sound setup do you have? It sounds like a sound channel isnt working (maybe a cable isnt connected right) or you have theres a weird sound setting somewhere (in the system or driver). For instance, there
can be strange audio issues when a game is set to stereo yet you have a 5.1 system.

You should go directly to the steam directory to make sure the whole fall folder is deleted before you reinstall. ALso make sure to delete the fallout 3 new vegas folder in my games (the one that holds your saved games). The ad/remove method doesnt always delete everything it should. You should also make sure your drive is free of errors and defraged. right click on your C drive and go to properties->tools. Clcik the error checking button and clcik start. You may be prompted for a reboot. Do so and the error checking should
go on the windows boot. Also use the defragger from the tools tab also.
