Problems with Mods that Add Physical Things

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:46 am

Ok, so I un-messed up my Skyrim, and got everything back to working normally, including the female faces. However, one old problem still persists, and a new problem has presented itself.

The new problem that I have is this; whenever I open the Quests/Data/Options menu, the area around it (Read: anything not part of the menu itself) either gets really flickery, or it turns yellow and gets really flickery. Its not game-breaking, but its really [censored] annoying. The only link I have to something that could have cause it is SKSE or the update for Skyrim. It didn't happen before the 1.6 update, and I haven't changed any mods of added any since it updated - all I did before this issue started is update to 1.6 and update to the newest version of SKSE.

The legacy issue I'm having is one for mods that add any physical objects that aren't really minor or NPCs. I had given up on solving this, but now I'm tired of missing out on some really nice mods. Essentially, whenever I add a mod that adds something major to the world, the game gets extraordinarily. less stable. I'll get random CTDs, or I'll hang at the black screen transition between interior/exterior or crash, or I'll crash whenever I come in the general vicinity of the cell where the object was added.

Some examples: CTD whenever going near the Solitude docks with Sea of Ghosts installed - massive water loading issues nearby the area. Build Your Home causes me to have issues near Ivarstead with CTD and black screen hang. Can't even start the game with one of the other TESV Quests installed (the one with the temple, I can't remember the name). Adding homes like the Asterix or other places cause me to have the same issues. The only exception to this is Moonpaths to Elswyr, which has never caused me problems and works just fine.

I don't know what is causing it; I gave up trying a while ago, but decided to give Build Your Own Home a try since it seemed to be pretty stable and cool......until it caused the same issues for me. I don't know if its conflicts or what; but turning off or uninstalling these mods are the only things that fix these issues when they occur.

If it helps, here are my currently installed, currently working list of mods:

You have 3 cloak esp's active, Boss should be reporting this when you run the load order. Maybe someone else can seepther potential issues.

The flickering yellow background is a recent bug introduced for people using AMD GPUs by the 1.6 update (most have attributed it to the use of outdated drivers). You might want to look at your drivers and update them if you are not already up to date.

The active list for BOSS is wrong for some reason. I only have one cloak esp active.

They up to date though.

And no one has any ideas on the other issue?

Is it a notebook? They may be up to date for the laptop manufacturer, but actually behind in the actual driver version as the manufacturer never released an updated laptop version themselves.

The active list for BOSS is wrong for some reason. I only have one cloak esp active.

BOSS doesn't list the "active" mods, it merely lists the mods in your Data folder and correctly orders the ones it knows about. I would still reccomend you delete the 2 Cloaks esps that you are not using from your Data Folder. Given the length of your load order I would strongly reccomend you download and install http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1840. It will give you a Bashed Patch.esp, right click this and select Rebuild Patch. If you have any active mods that are Mergable; these will be any mods listed in green in your modlist; you will get a popup box telling you to "Deactivate these mods prior to building the bashed patch." Click OK and Bash will automatically deactivate them, You will then get a popup box with Merge Patches and Leveled Lists ticked. If you select Merge Patches you will see the list of mods that Bash will merge into it's Bashed Patch. If you select Levelled Lists you will see any mods that require their levelled lists to be merged into the Bashed Patch. I'm pretty sure you have several mods that are in need of this function. All you need to do however is select Build Patch and Wrye Bash will do all this for you. Any mod that can be merged into your Bashed Patch is one less esp slot being used. Any mod with it's Levelled Lists merged into the Bashed Patch is one not being stomped upon by a later loading mod. This can fix conflicts and potentional CTDs.

Wrye Bash also has the best way to post your load order. Follow these steps:

1) Start Up Wrye Bash
2) Go to the Mods tab and Right Click on File
3) Select List Mods - A pop up window will appear with your load Order
4) Right click inside it and select Select All
5) Copy and Paste your load order here

However the current problem with any mods that add things to the Landscape is that they could potentially have "dirty edits". This is a problem that can cause CTDs because of missing data that another mod is relying on, that was caused by a prior mod inadvertantly removing it. The problem is that at the moment we can't track these down yet because we don't yet have a Mod editing programme (Such as Tes4Edit, FO3Edit and FNVEdit from previous Bethseda games) that can clean these problems. AlitheLord is currently working on a TES5Edit that will work as a Java app, and I wish him the best of luck with that. For now if for instance you wish to use "Build Your Own Home" you may have to comb through your modlist to try to find which mod (or mods) is conflicting with it. The best way to do this is to have Build Your Own Home activated while deactivating half of your other mods, load up a save from before you first activated "Build Your Own Home" and see if you get the CTDs/hangs. If you do deactivate half of the rest and so on until you find the conflicting mod. If you don't CTD/hang then reactivate half of the mods you previously deactivated and try again. Keep doing this process until you find the offending mod(s).

All of the above pretty much applies to Skyrim and previous Elder Scrolls Games (back to Morrowind at least). Unfortunately Skyrim introduced a brand new problem of it's own, and that is scripts from mods persisting in Save Games even after you have uninstalled the offending mod. This can cause problems since Skyrim tries to activate these scripts and finds itself unable to and CTD. There isn't a full proof way to fix this but this http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#tab=Mods_and_Savegames details the best possible way to go about it. If you're still encountering persistant problems after doing this you may just have to svck it up and start a new game.

As for your other issue I can't really help you there, I have an Nvidia Graphics Card (GTX 550 Ti to be precise) and I don't get this issue.

Hope all of this goes some way to helping you, if not in your current game then at least in future games.

Artorius.
