PS3 Backwards Compatibility?

Post » Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:57 pm

So I heard from one of my friends that the PS3 Slim model 120 GB is backwards compatible for all PS1 games. I tried looking this up online, but I can't find any articles that are past 2009.

So my question to the all knowing forum members is..... Is the PS3 slim 120GB model backwards compatible with all PS1 games, some or not at all? Same with the PS2 games. I really don't care about the PS2 games as much as I do the PS1 games.

Yes to PS1, no to PS2

So why is that? Is it because Sony is still making games for the PS2 or is it for some other reason?

Greed. They did have software emulation in some models, and could easily be pushed out to all if they wanted, but they don't because they want you to buy new PS3 games instead of playing your PS2 games so they can get more money

Apparently it was too cost restrictive to put the PS2 chip in there, and software emulation was being a bit buggy, so they dropped it.

I however, have a 60GB Launch model, and it does have the PS2 chip.

I've never heard a real clear cut answer as to that with the PS2 reason being one of them. Another reason I heard was due to the required chipset to "unlock" the data on the discs. For the PS1 this is relatively easy however concerning the PS2 it isn't and it was too costly. As a result they discontinued the PS3 models that had B/C abilities for PS2 games. It was only the PS3 original console released during launch that had it with a few of the 80gig models I believe. After that they stopped making the B/C PS3 models and again I don't really know why exactly.

Only thing i've seen though is developers taking old PS2 games and emulating them for the PS3. However at this moment i've only see this done with the God Of War series instead of others. This might be due to legal rights concerning who owns the actual rights to the game.

ya but I read that you can't play all the PS2 games to full satisfaction. There were a couple articles that said they were really buggy, or froze3 all the time. True?

They quote it as an 80% success rate, but 100% of my PS2 games must be alright, because I've yet to have a problem. Thing is, I paid for all these features they subsequently stripped from it, so if/when this one dies, I'm gonna be pissed when I have to replace it.

But all told, DEFRON hit it right on the head. The real reason is money.

Initially that was the case, but it got better as time went on with new patches. The European model only had emulation, no actual ps2 hardware.

Some games froze, some ran well, some even looked and played better than on some PS2 models, strangely enough. The PS3 price had to drop though, and manufacturing the Emotion Engine chip for longer time was the first thing the plan they killed to do that. Quite understandable to cut one (admittedly big) feature to make your product cheaper for the end user and more profitable at the same time.

At any rate, PS2 consoles are totally cheap now. It's really not a hassle to get one in addition to the PS3.

was that the same for the US versions as well or no?

But I would think by making it backwards compatible, people would forget about buying a PS2 and buy a PS3 which is more expensive then a PS2....

Plus they can't sell as many "HD remakes" of PS2 games if you can just play those games on your PS3.

Earlier models in the US had hardware, the slims were pretty much the same all round.

No, the problem is getting them to work with a modern HDTV.

Its probably already been said, but if you can get one of the first PS3s, you can play PS2 games.

Yeah, and if you don't want to deal with the small hard drive space on the old fat PS3s, you can just replace it's hard drive with a compatible laptop hard drive.

I bought a 60GB PS3 off Ebay for exactly this reason. I wanted to be able to play my PS2 collection, but I wanted a PS3, so I got a PS3 60GB and let my sister have the PS2.

Basically Sony dropped the ball and this is probably the main reason why I don't have a PS3 right now.

It was hardware emulation. It was removed to make the slim smaller and to bring the cost down.
