Purchasing a 3DS

Post » Fri Sep 16, 2011 7:20 am

Basically I want to know what are the features of the 3DS? Web browser? Built in HDD or spot for a SD card? As well as what are good games out/coming out for it? I know there's LoZ, starfox 64, and I thought there was an Animal Crossing game coming out for it (or was out), but that's all I heard of.

Thanks in advance,
TJ

I would recommend against getting one currently unless you don't have a DS. There really aren't enough games out for it now to make it worth getting.

An http://kotaku.com/5837814/crazy-rumor-nintendo-3ds-is-actually-getting-a-second-anolog-slider-add+on-for-new-portable-monster-hunter was revealed that would add a second anolog stick, L2 and R2 buttons. While it's still technically only for one game (Monster Hunter 3G) and exclusive to Japan, it's expected that the inevitable 3DS redesign will include a second anolog built in. Considering there really aren't many games out right now worth picking up and that the release schedule for the next few months isn't much better, it's probably in your best interest to hold off for now. At least until after Tokyo Game Show (or, more specifically, Nintendo's pre-TGS 3DS event).

I wouldn't buy one right now, Nintendo has admitted design flaws and who knows if they'll roll out another 3DS soon or not.

I like mine, but I did get it only because I haven't upgraded my handhelds since the GBA, and I did want to get the 3D games that are coming out.

Well my DS broke long ago, so is this backwards compatible? Even with a possible re-release, I'd still like something to have to play my DS collection on, as well as some of the new 3DS titles. If it's backwards compatible with DS games, I gues ~$170 isn't too bad.

The only thing the 3DS is not backwards compatible is with GBA, GBC, and GB games. It can run DS and DSi games just fine.

I enjoy mine, though the only good game out right now is Ocarina of Time: 3D.

But, Nintendo has plenty of titles in the lineup.

And yes, its backwards compatible with all DS games, but it won't play any GB games.

Well it being backwards compatible is a huge plus.

Would you guys say it's a better buy than say an iPod Touch 4? Basically I just need something for mobile gaming (long rides to and from uni, plus time between classes), so I think the 3DS is going to be what I'll pick up.

EDIT: Also how is the 3D? Does it make your head hurt after a while, and when it's on does it really work?

Just picked it up today (flame red) and so far it's pretty spiffy. It took me AGES to find the stylus for it though. I kept poking all over the sides of it, and rummaging through the box until I finally found it on the back. The 3D works pretty well and surprisingly doesn't bother my eyes. Haven't picked up any games for it yet though (3DS specific anyways, have a decent library of DS games), so I'll be sure to pick up OoT soon. All in all, it seems like a good purchase, especially with Nintendo releasing a remastered version of Four Swords with a single player option new levels and what not for free on the 28th.

One question though, is there going to be any Flash support for the browser? Not that it's a HUGE problem, but not being able to watch videos (Youtube) is kind of a downer.
