Quarry deathclaws

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:29 pm

Anyone got any tips for dealing with the quarry? Me boone and ede didn't have any trouble with the young deathclaw u meet on the way, but even 1 of the regular deathclaws kicks our quantum singularity. Usually ending up killing me or boone in a few hits.

I did this yesterday at lvl 18.
I told Veronica and ED-E to wait over by the miner camp right before the quarry, so I wouldn't have to worry about them committing suicide.

You will need a Sniper rifle or something powerful and scoped like it. Get max distance from the death claws, so you can only see them when zoomed in, not when zoomed out. Seems the ones around the one you are plinking don't aggro that way.

Kill the ones around the building when you come into the quarry, and then jump on one of those long belts that go upwards onto those high buildings. They wont come onto those things, so from these you can happily snipe them all to death, just bring a lot of bullets.

Lone wolf it armed with a .308 sniper and carefully kill them one by one. A good stealth crit shot to the head almost one shots them and they are easy enough finished off.
There are a few rocky outcrops you can get on top of that they can't as well.

This is what I did. Actually ended up on the cliff next to junction by walking up the hill before the camp.

Watch out. They WILL come up the belts after you. But not if you jump up onto the higher belt and go all the way to the top. Anyway, to start go onto the rocks to the left of you as you enter the quarry. You really have to jump around a bit to do it but they cannot get to you there. Then take out the ones that are closest to the entrance. After they're gone you can go up the belt on the left and take them out from there.

I did this without a sniper rifle or scope and let me tell you, it took literally something like 200 bullets with the Cowboy Repeater with Guns skill at 90 to finish them all off. It was very tedious. Later after I got the Sniper Rifle I was absolutely delighted how I could take them out with a single shot from a distance.. So you may want to wait to do this one until after you get the Sniper Rifle. I set up some frag mine + dynamite traps and coaxed some of them to come chase me. My Explosive skill was like 30 or something but it took off half their health where I could finish them off, tediously, from the safety of the belt.

This quest really isn't worth doing until you get the Sniper Rifle.

If you're using the repeater, you can't be THAT far in. What level are you?

I can guarantee it can be done but boy is it not worth it. You can buy a brand spanking new Sniper Rifle at the gun runners outside Freeside for several thousand caps. OR ... take one in very poor condition from a top bunk in a tent in Camp McCarran and gussy it up to 100% with weapon repair kits. I chose the latter course cause I'm such a cheapskate.

Used the Anti-Material Rifle here. Made it really easy.

Gobi and M1 did some really good work there.

There is a easy way to take on the DeathClaw mother: find the Khan camp and moving down from there you will see a container for boulders, there you can snipe safe.

I just did this today using the Sniper with AP ammo and silencer. I used the Trail Carbine to finish them off but just as easily could have just hip fired the sniper. I did not jump on any ledge either though I did have to use plenty of stims. I never aggro'ed more than one at a time which was key.

I second the suggestion to do this with the Sniper or the Anti-Material Rifle. Lay some mines in front of you as it is always amusing to see Deathclaws fly.

Well, yeah, it IS kick-ass. But on deathclaws it just seems so...underpowered.

I just killed all of them except the mother.. as a level 8-9 with boone and unarmed.

i'd lure them out.. use boxing gloves on them to KO them out.. and beat the living crap out of them while they were unconscious. For some reason the mother is just too fast.. and one hit on me and my character is dead.

Use the Anti-Materiel rifle with incendiary rounds or the Brush gun or This Machine and watch death bestow these horrible creatures. I used This Machine to destroy the 20+ Deathclaws on the eastside of the river without a hitch.

At the freakishly strong level of 14 (well i had just gotten my first Sniper Rifle I was enthused), I decided it was time to kill me some Deathclaws. I wanted revenge for an early indecent when I was greeted with my first NV one shot death. I was going great until I pulled a group of 2, but survived, but barely. So I felt confident, until I pulled the Alpha without even noticing he was special. He 2 shot me.

I changed tactics and added a little thing called Boone before I took him on the second time.

My new motto:

Boone, your anti death.

Edit - why did I type 20 instead of 14. I'm not even at 20 yet.

I did it at level 15. Used Cowboy Repeater and .357 magnum with a long barrrel upgrade. Took a lonnng time. I wanted payback for some earlier butt-whoopings I had taken from Deathclaws. Veronica was with me, but she kept falling unconscious.

Kept my distance so they couldn't figure out where I was till it was too late.

I worked my way over to one of the cranes that's above the mine. The Deathclaws couldn't figure out how to get to me. If more than one was out in the open I'd hit them with dynamite.

Alpha Male was the last, I got got him down to just a couple HP, pulled out my Fire Axe, ran down into the pit and finished him off. Payback accomplished....

Took'em out somewhat early using the incinerator.. Or was it heavy incinerator? Whichever it was, I "sniped" them with it from a safe distance, took care to let the fire do some damage before I did the next shoot and whenever I ran out of flamer fuel I used whatever else I had available at the moment...

I used the hunting rifle and AP ammo and it worked very well for me when i was pulling four or more at times, i did have veronica and ed-e though, she kicks alot of ass and i mean ALOT and is my personal tank to distract them and take damage while i keep picking em off. Ed-e helps a ton also with his super long sensors that helps make sure you dont get surprised by them and that you have max distance between you and the deathclaw which equals more time to kill it. I can shoot with the best so to me Boone is competition, veronica compliments my style the greatest by far since i play guns and energy with no melee at all. I have no fear anymore with my companions, kinda makes up for the lost perks and stats that would amount by the end of FO3 :woot:
