Question about sleep/hibernate

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:38 pm

Just installed a programme to help with finding a driving test cancellation (as I'm not waiting another 2 months for a test), and the idea is that it checks 24/7 for a cancellation and texts me when it finds one. Problem is that the programme needs to be running constantly otherwise it won't check the database. If I were to put my computer in to hibernate/sleep mode (admittedly I don't really know the difference) would it continue to run in the background? I would rather not leave my laptop on constantly for what could be a while, but it's pointless having the programme if I don't.
If not can anyone suggest ways that I can just save power when I'm not using it?

Thanks in advance.

Nah, it wouldnt keep looking as the wireless NIC would be powered off (for other reasons as well, like hibernate saving everything to the HDD and resuming on power on and sleep only refreshing the RAM)

On a side note, I keep hibernate disabled. Hiberfil.sys took up way too much space (16GB) on my SSD.

Yeh I thought this might be the case. I guess I'll just have to shut down the display and put it in power save mode when I'm out. Thanks again.

Hm, I can't even find it on mine. When you say disabled, do you mean just not using it? Or actually removing that from your system?

The file should be hidden. It will usually be 75%-100% of how much RAM you have. You can disable it by opening up the command prompt as admin and typing in powercfg -h off.

On a standard HDD it shouldnt really take up that much space, but on a SSD you would definitely notice a chunk of space missing. Also sleep will drain the battery faster than hibernate.

Hope your area isn't prone to power outages otherwise you might come home to a blue-screen.

Thanks for the input, but yeh I've never noticed much space missing that I couldn't account for, so it can't be that big.
And I never usually get power outages, but I'm bound to get one now. Hopefully I get a cancellation soon then it won't be a problem. Thanks again.
