Question about wives who are not followers

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:53 am

Is it possible to get your wife, who is not a follower, to wear other clothes if you’re playing on a console? I don’t want my miner wife to have to keep wearing miner clothes or others whose default are hooded robes.

Good question. I had planned on trying that with Mjoll (who was my follower) as seeing her at home in full armor is a bit of a let down. (don't even get me started on that clown Aerin who followed her to my home in Solitude). For myself, I can't wait to get my hands on the Emperor's Robes. Now that is a suit to lounge around home in!

I don't think so. Even using the console to add clothes to, say Sylgia, and then using the console to make her equip them, will only work temporarily. The very next time you see her, she will be back in her default clothing. I say this because I married Sylgia and tried. The issue is that (having explored it in the Creation Kit) she is designed to have a default set of clothing that will re-equip itself (in Sylgia's case, miner's clothes and a pickaxe). Only by creating a mod that changes or removes her default set can you get a non-follower wife to wear something else.

I seem to remember there was a post sometime last week that mentioned if your spouse opens a store you can buy their default clothes from inventory and sell them back clothes you want them to wear.

i've not tested it and can't find the post so i'm not sure if it actually works or not.

The re-equipping is interesting. I have given the follower Aranea (not available for marriage) some simple unenchanted blue robes and she has equipped them. She has equipped them a few times in battle over Master Robes of Destruction. I wish there was a way to get other NPCs to equip other types of clothing (on consoles).

I remember that post. I tested it with Aela twice. It didn't work. I was just several hundred septim lighter for the effort.

That svcks, because as Dragonborn my wife needs to be dressed appropriately. I, as the Dragonborn, work hard slaying dragons, bandits, and the undead to make gold so I can provide for my wife and what will people think seeing my wife dressed in miners’ clothes, that I’m a bum who doesn’t care about his wife. I have gems, rings and necklaces to give along with fine clothes that I can’t.

I would like to have married Annekke Crag-Jumper in Darkwater Crossing but she’s already married so I thought of marring her daughter Sylgja in Shor’s Stone but what would her mother think of me if I could not provide nice clothes. Annekke looks so good in Forsworn armor as my follower. I kind of like the mother daughter thing.

Here's the link. I kept it for future use, but since it seems it doesn't work... Anyway, if people want to try:

EDIT: It seems you can at least have them in their underwear, if that's what you want...

Yeah, what was determined from that post (not tested by me yet, because my Pickpocket isn't quite to 100) if you Pickpocket their clothes, but leave at least one article on them (shoes most likely) they'll stay in their underwear.

I agree with BretonSpy: we should be able to give them clothes and jewelry to wear. I've got several outfits set up for Muiri and Sylgja if Bethesda ever allows us to give them clothing to wear. :P I've even enchanted the clothes that I'd like to give them in case the value of the item determines what they'll wear.
