I've noticed some shops have started selling Orcish and Elven and Dwarven items, whereas they once only sold Iron and Steel, and Hide and Leather.

Now, in my past playthroughs, I always smithed my items - but I ain't doing that this time around. I want to buy all my armor.

As I level up, do armors unlock in the shops? So if I keep leveling up, I may soon find shops selling Ebony armor? What about Daedric armor, do they sell that eventually?

What are some cons of not leveling my Smithing?

As far as I know, Ebony and Daedric can't be bought in shops. Ebony ingots, yes; the armor itself, no. You have to find that stuff.

And of course, since you're going to be looking for it, it's going to become even more difficult to find. It seems like that when you have a character that uses light armor, you end up finding all kinds of great ebony stuff. But when your character goes heavy, there's more glass armor to be found than you can shake a stick at.

I'm pretty sure that the appearance in the game of armor and weapons made from higher level materials depends on the level of your character. From my experience, though, the availability of Daedric and Dragon gear in the shops is limited. I've been high enough where I did find both types in random loot but even there it was still nowhere near as common as iron/steel/leather and other lower level gear.

The big downside to not leveling up in the Smithing skill, assuming that you will never want to make anything yourself, is that the amount you can improve your gear (however you acquire it) at the workbench/grindstone will be limited, both by your skill level and your inability to take perks for higher level materials as they appear. That can be remedied somewhat by using potions that temporarily increase your smithing skill and/or wearing items that provide the same effect. However for any enchanted gear, you will never be able to improve it at all if you don't get high enough in Smithing to take the Arcane Smithing perk.

Ebony armor is level 32, so you will find it in random loot and in stores after you reach that level. Daedric armor is level 49, but it is extremely rare to find them because it is 20 times less likely to appear than other armor types. But in theory, it is possible for a daedric armor to appear in the store if your level is high enough.

In my 2 games I think I may have found a Daedric Helm and only a couple Daedric weapons. In over 300 hours on both (one at 58 and one at 76) I've never found a full set of Daedric armor. I think I've seen some of the blacksmiths selling Ebony weapons, but I may have that wrong. I smith on both of my characters so once I get to a certain level and get all the Enchants that I want I usu stop browsing their inventories.

Yeah, in my experience with the Daedric and the Dragon, if you want to put together a full set in a reasonable amount of time you pretty much have to make it yourself. You could spend countless hours exploring dungeons and checking with merchants and even if you were lucky enough to find all the pieces it's probably not gonna happen any faster than if you just invested that time in smithing as you went and took the necessary perks and made them yourself.

Plus there's always the chance that found or purchased pieces will come with pre-existing enchantments that do your character no good at all. If you don't care about bumps from enchantments and weren't planning to enchant stuff yourself, that's not a big deal, but it's still a PITA when you're playing a righteous upstanding noble "might for right" type and finally find that pair of gauntlets you've wanted for ages, only to find they've been pre-enchanted with Fortify Pickpocket.

i was level 23 made myself some ebony weapons through hard resource finding, shop keepers tend to sell the weapons early if you have the full set before the pre-required level to get them in store.
