Question for Australian and New Zealand members

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 9:10 am

I’m curious, is there a term that you use that covers both territories? While certainly distinct there are a number of situations where you are bundled together, and I’m not aware of a singular term that covers that.

Australasia or Oceania (the latter covering more territory)

Though I obviously don't live in either :P

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Oceania, I think. But I'm not from there, so maybe there's another term, too.

Both are correct. I don't think there is one that's used more frequently than the other.

We don't have a term that covers solely Australia and New Zealand. We don't like to associate anyway so I'm not surprised. :P

Yeah, I've gotten the feeling that neither nation really wanted the world to have a singular term so they could just refer to those English-speaking people in the far off corner of the map without giving it much thought - distinction has quite a lot of worth. :)

When discussing things like the Australia/New Zealand release date of a game it feels improper to use "Oceania" as I'm pretty sure most of the other territories aren't getting copies of FONV flown in. On multiple occasions I've actually heard people use "Anzac" to refer to the two nations bundled together, which is wrong on multiple levels and makes me embarassed to be an American. For some time now I've wanted to say "actually they prefer [insert convenient name here], ANZAC refers to a joint military group from WWI" but it looks like I'm out of luck.

"them.."

Elder Scrolls V will be released on April 8, 2016 in the United States, April 10 in Europe, and May 31 for them.

I like it! :D

ANZAC might do it if you want to be very specific, as that would exclude other nations (comes from WW1 - The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). Nowerdays you might hear of the "Anzac Spirit" or in a Aus-NZ sports event might be called the ANZAC test or something similar.

But usually Australiasia or Oceana would be used.

Though I obviously don't live in either :P

The former includes a bunch of other islands, but is much better than using "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps". The later refers to basically all the islands in all the oceans/seas around this general area :P.

One option is A/NZ (as is used for the standards we share, e.g. A/NZS 3000:2007). Doesn't work so well for speech, though.

Not really, Australasia and Oceania both refer to a much larger area (including many South-East Asian countries). ANZAC is...well exactly what you described. A joint military corps during WWI.
I agree with CoolShady, we don't want a term that covers both of us, it's be similar to asking what you call the joint territory of The U.S. and Canada.

Is there a term that covers both territories? Perhaps, judging by what some people have been saying.

Is there a term we use? No. Certainly not.

It's called Northern America (granted, it does include some European territories, but no other countries) :P

Do note that Northern America is different from North America (North America includes Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America)

What? 2016? Have you typed that wrong or has the game actually been delayed five years? If so making us wait two months longer is a bit of a kick in the balls isn't it? I mean whats stopping them from releasing it everywhere simultaneously? In two months someone could just import it from the states so theres no point.

You'd probably be right with Oceania or Australasia. I've never heard the word "Oceanics" used to describe Kiwis and Aussies together, so I dont think there's actually a term you could use to describe both peoples like "Europeans" or "Americans".

Although its important to remember Australia's the only important one obviously. We just consider New Zealand our smaller, slighty more-sheep filled cousin. :teehee:

PFFFT, Australia is just the 4th island of NZ, with little other than a really big desert and a red rock to get excited about.
Oh, and there's also the biggest sheep fence in the world. Whoop whoop.

That hardly explains why there's more sheep-sha- New Zealanders here than actually in New Zealand... :P

Apparently even Google Chrome spellchecker doesn't recognize "Zealand" as a legitimate word :P

Pfft....New Zealand has sheep, sheep, sheep, flightless brown chickens, sheep, more sheep, and the occasional goat.

Australia has amazing natural wonders like Uluru, the Twelve Apostles, Kakadu, and the Great Barrier Reef. Not to mention fantastic cities like Sydney filled with wonderous attractions like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House! :D

We have mountains with snow.
And our trees don't secrete flammable oils.
And our http://i1.treklens.com/photos/3094/100_0010_2.jpg is pretty much the same as your http://www.earthdocumentary.com/pics/sydney_harbour_bridge-01.jpg

No, we mostly just rant about how much Australia and NZ (and South Africa, and lower South America, and all the others) are so much better that anything the northern hemisphere has to offer.

Your harbour bridge is a gigantic 403 forbidden stretching across the water?

We also have mountains capped with snow. Funnily enough we call them the Snowy Mountains. And our trees secrete flammable oils because they're awesome! Who doesnt want a tree that provides free flamethrower fuel? :flamethrower:

I've heard the area referred to as Australasia more than the likes of Oceania, but like others have said, we don't really like to associate :P We'll usually talk about Australia as "Across the ditch" (i.e. the Tasman Sea).

It's funny, I seem to remember a certain rugby team wearing black thrashing a certain rugby team in yellow over the weekend...

See, I have to agree with this. I wish the local cacti secreted flammable liquid.

I really don't get the wierd semi-serious, semi-joking nationalistic animosity between NZ and Australia that some of their respective citizen's like to perpetuate. Myself (and I presume many other aussies and kiwis -though not in this thread as far as I can see) don't care about facile sporting rivalry and have no problems being associated/lumped together with their neighbours. I see very little difference between the two culturally, and when I've been on holiday in Australia I don't feel out of place whatsoever. Personally I feel that greater integration (political/economic whatever) between NZ and Australia would be great and would welcome such an event with open arms.

I suppose we're sorta like siblings. We pretend to hate each other, but deep down, there's a lot of love. I've been to Australia, and I loved it, and I've made some really good Aussie friends on these forums. I assume it's a bit like the America/Canada and perhaps the England/Wales relationships
