Question regarding hardware performance.

First off, Skyrim runs like dog poop on my 6870's after that latest 12.4 driver update(even after reverting back to 12.3 and using driver sweeper and manually deleting all AMD/ATI folders). It is like I can't shake the curse off. So I thought maybe it isn't my drivers... maybe this could be hardware degrading and dying. So I tried making my second GPU as my main screen and running Skyrim on it and got about 2 FPS Vs. the 24 - high 30's I get on my main. I don't know a lot about PC's but that seems wrong. Is it supposed to be like that? Like my entire second GPU is just some small amount of back up only good for using Crossfire (which does not work well on ANY game I have used it on)?

I spoke with someone a few months ago and they said my PSU was not putting out enough voltage for my GPU's to take. Something to do with not having a 12v ramp or something I forget. So I guess before I go blowing any cash I want to know some opinions on this. And sorry if this isn't very Skyrim related but it is the only game that I really want to make any upgrades on my PC for and plus talking to members on this forum on and off I have grown to trust many of the opinions on here.

If you're wondering about the power supply, might want to post it's specs or a link to a product page. Might as well post full system specs really.

GPU1: AMD Radeon HD 6870 1gb DDR5 PICE
GPU2: AMD Radeon HD 6870 1gb DDR5 PICE
CPU: Intel i7-875k @ 2.93GHz
MEM: 8GB DDR3 Ram
HD: 1 TB SATA III 6GB/S 7200 RPM
MB: Gigabyte P55A-UD3 Crossfire/SLI DDR3
PSU: Xtremegear 700w

I can't find a direct link to the PSU but the 600 watt ones are about 32 bucks. That right there sends up warning flags.

Yeah, just running a quick search I'm not seeing anything positive about that power supply. A bad power supply often won't even meet half the listed wattage and definitely won't deliver the amps needed for a 6870, even more so with two of them. A bad PSU can kill the whole system in a heartbeat, so I'd swap that out immediately. What kind of a budget do you have?

Also, I'm not going to claim to be a PSU expert, for the best advice on choosing a new power supply, I'd recommend posting here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1368710-the-community-tech-thread-no-114/

I am pretty dead set on ordering this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139015&Tpk=Corsair%20AX850 and then giving my system a good overclocking. It is weird because even with this cruddy PSU I can run any other modless game on ultra settings and get between 40 - 60 FPS. BUT... I can not for the life of me use crossfire (lag spikes and bad FPS) and I never see my GPU's get 100 percent usage.

Solid choice. With that budget, a Seasonic platinum unit is another option if you want to go for max efficiency: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151111

Can't go wrong either way. :goodjob:
