I have a new (six months old) Hisense HD TV that when turned on with the PS3 shows 1078p (or whatever it is). When you fire up Skyrim it actually drops all the way down into the 400i range, is this normal? Using HDMI cable from PS3 to HDTV.

It should not drop down to the 400i range. It should, however, drop down to 720p (most PS3 games do). Be sure to check your Video Output Settings in the Display Settings on the PS3 to see if 720p is checked.
