I just wondered, you can become Thane of holds before and after you begin the campaign of siding with either the Stormcloaks or the Empire... what happens if you are a Thane of Riften for instance, and the Jarl is being replaced by a new one... do I loose my title as a Thane?

No. In fact, you lose any existing bounty in that hold if your side takes over.

Nice... always wanted that Stormcloak shield... so I guess I can launch an attack on a few guards before taking over the city.
