Questions about Markath (possible spoilerish comments inside

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 5:44 pm

Is there any way, at all, to get through the quest about the Forsworn in Markath without stabbing What's-His-Name-The-Unlucky in the stupid mines? I find it unlikely that the entire quest cannot be completed without committing a murder. If I return to the Shrine of Talos where the guards have murdered the guy that asked me to investigate the issue in the first place, then there's no way to avoid going to prison. If I kill the guards there's just more of them outside. So off to the silver mine I go...where I apparently must kill the guy, period, with no option to do anything else. That's a bunch of crap. Is there something I missed?

I guess this should be in the spoiler section.

Spoiler

I actually killed the boss (can't remember his name) and took his key. I assume you can pickpocket the key off him as well and escape through the cave behind that one cell.

Just pray that the guards leave the shrine after you complete the quest, or else you'll have them stuck in a never-ending loop...pretty much making markarth off-limits unless you cheat, or run around like a mad-man.

The thing that disgusted me about this option, even though it was the first thing I did was that
Spoiler
I ended up doing exactly what that horrid bastard Silver-Blood who was the REAL villain wanted, and he had the gall to come out, thank me, give me a pardon, and a reward
I ended up loading and doing his quest despite the murder just so that scum got what he deserved.

Yeah, when I tried pickpocketing the boss it didn't even show the key as an option. Just a note and something else, not a key. If you kill him, at least three other people run into the room and try to kill you, one of whom is that hulking big-ass orc. I'm level 24, but I don't have squat for equipment. I've got a pickaxe and a bound sword - and that's it, and that's all I'm getting. It isn't possible to win that fight, so it seems like the quest is simply there to force you to commit a murder, which seems ridiculous, and frankly unlikely. I keep feeling like I've missed something, but I can't imagine what.

The Silver-Blood didn't even ask me to kill the Forsworn leader. I'm just at a loss as to what to do. I can't imagine that they gave you a quest where you get almost to the end, and then they reveal that you can't complete it, or even get out of prison, without committing a murder.

I'll try that, but I don't really have any perks that'll help with that. I'm a big sword-swinging warrior type. I guess I should get double damage from the sneak, though, I suppose.

Seriously.

Complaining about a little murder. You kill dragons and demons and skeletons and witches, but shanking a guy in a prison is too much?

The dragons and demons and skeletons and witches are all trying to kill me or innocent people in the countryside. I'm not gonna go shank somebody just because some criminal in prison says so.

Anybody else have a different take on this quest? Any way to get out of prison without either (1) murdering a dude or (2) fighting three guys at once while unarmored and virtually unarmed? I'm not playing any sort of mage or thief, btw. Straight up skull-basher, but I need weapons.

I have played it every which way you can, and you still end up being a lackey. IIRC it was either shank the orc gate guard, or shank another fellow inmate. no ifs, ands, or buts.

Christ, that's annoying. Especially since I can't beat the orc, period, because people jump in on his side.

Guess I won't bother completing that particular quest. Might even go all the way back to a save from when I just got into Markarth. I didn't do anything but go through that quest in Markarth yet anyway, so it'll be no loss at all.

Can't you just serve time like in other prisons? I didn't try it, I also murdered the guy after I tried to kill all the others and failed, but they kept saying that I should mine the ore to serve the time. I thought that was an option when I went through it.

By the time I met with the Forsworn leader Madanach, I had learned enough to know that he was crucial to the poisonous corruption in Markarth. That was still not enough for me to walk up and murder him, but when he ordered me to murder fellow inmate Grisvar the Unlucky, that sealed Madanach's fate.

When most of the rest of the mine's imprisoned population then decided to kill me, Beast Form saved my [censored].

Lucky you he was waiting for you with a key on his pocket to proceed with the escape.

Very convenient

You do know that the other guy isn't immortal, right?

And he sleeps alone. Though you have to wait until a little after midnight.

Yeah, I know. Now I just gotta see if I can kill him without bringing the rest of the general population down on my head. There's no way I'm gonna survive a fight with three guys when I've got crap weapons and no armor.

I quite liked how the story of this quest worked out for my guy...

Spoiler

I'm playing a Nord, so whilst disgusted by Silver-Blood I really took acception by that Nose fella and his minions wailing on me and persecuting my kinsmen, so I already decided the head of the Forsworn had to be cut off. Mainly because I'm not the forgive and forget type of guy. Try and kill me, I kill you. I'm not some bell ringing hippy that takes this stuff lightly.

My first instincts was to just make my way into his chambers and dispatch him without alerting anyone else. Though being a 2-handed focus character I couldn't defeat him on numerous attempts and was then forced to kill Mr Unlucky to gain his trust. Hey, it's a life in prison or take a guy's life. Life seems cheap in Skyrim, so it was a straight forward decision. Besides, Mr Unlucky was a lifer and a career criminal. He had it coming.

So, I resolved to get in with the Forsworn, join the escape, and when the opportunity was there I'd kill Marklar or whatever his name was.

As luck would have it he handed me all my gear whilst the rest of his knuckle dragging posse slipped out the gate and I was able to butcher him without anyone being the wiser.

Best of all, I walked out with the armour of the old gods and got silver-bloods ring thrown into the bargain.

Turned out nice again :D

There's no reason to bother trying to kill the orc or trying to fight through the dungeon you have to go through after, just get that key off the body and make a run for it. Your an ill equipped escaping prisoner, fighting your way out of anything isn't on your to do list.

It's unfortunate that it's impossible to pickpocket the key off the foresworn king though.

Thanks - I just grabbed the key and ran like hell through the gate. Worked like a charm, although boy are those giant spiders tougher when you've go no armor and you're just swinging a couple pickaxes.
