Quick Muffle Question

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 10:48 am

If I am wearing no armor, is muffle necessary?

I know I cant be sneak/sprinting without being noisy but I mean the slow paced movement while wearing robes, would muffle or the perk muffled movement be that helpful or necessary?

I suppose I should also ask, how helpful is muffled movement if I am wearing light armor instead of robes?

I've never made much noise in light armor with a decently high Sneak. On my assassin character I took the Muffled Movement perk, but mainly because I wanted Shadow Warrior. Hopefully someone with experience in Robes will come along.

Edit:
Even on my Heavy Armor guy (Daedric) I don't get detected, but his Sneak is pretty high as well. Occasionally I'll put on Shrouded Shoes and then he makes no noise as far as I can tell, although people report that the Muffle enchant is only 50% noise reduction.

Muffle is always useful, whatever your armour.
But I only ever use it by having enchanted boots.
Otherwise, theres no point, for me. I get by fine without ever casting muffle or wasting points on muffle perks.

Muffle does nothing for cloth, because it isn't considered armor. The silence perk is good, but the muffle perk is a prerequisite for it so....

It's entirely up to you to decide how far you want to go down the sneak tree. Personally, I would just get stealth 5/5.

You always inherently make noise while sneaking.

Even if you are naked, you generate a small amount.
Light armor generates more.
Heavy Armor generates more still.

The spell Muffle renders you 100% silent while sneaking.
The perk in the sneak tree "Muffled Movement" renders you 50% silent while sneaking.
The dark brotherhood shrouded boots also render your 50% silent. This effect stacks with the perk, for 100%

If you are lucky enough to learn to learn the muffled enchant, anything you enchant will reduce noise by 100%

One thing I have noticed though is that if I have on light armor and Muffle enchanted boots, I can still be detected faster than if I also cast the Muffle spell. It seems that maybe some stacking is going on.

IMO nothing beats that spell, not even the enchanted boots. I never did try naked though.

Self-enchanted boots or the Nightingale Boots (32+ version) are the only footwear capable of 100% muffle. if you were using anything else, then the Muffle spell would confer additional sneakiness. It's hard to actually test, because there are several other variables involved in detection that could affect your results. But according to the coding, there is no benefit to having >100% muffle.

Muffle is great to level up illusion. Other than that, meh.

I mean, it also grants 100% muffle....you could in theory sprint around a Falmer dungeon and as long as you didn't run into one or get spotted by a Charus, you would remain undetected!

To give you an idea of how my Sneak works:
Sneak 100
All perks in the Sneak constellation
4 pieces of gear with +40% Fortify Sneak enchantment
0 gear with Muffle enchantment
Do not cast Muffle spell

I get NPCs bumping into me and displacing me all the time and I still remain undetected.

I know you're not interested in all the perks, but I was just trying to give you some perspective. :P

I like the sound of casting Muffle.
I like the sound of casting all the Illusion stuff, actually.

Ironic since Silent Casting is in the Illusion constellation.

All illusion spells cast silently to begin with. Silent Casting perk makes all other spell casts silent.

I'm not sure that's true, but I meant it as a joke.

I agree. Go with the enchantment over perks and casting.

Invisibility is a very loud illusion spell. Without Quiet Casting everyone in the building becomes alert to you.
