Quickest House?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 10:40 pm

I need a house to store my rare gear in, and I'm willing to do some quests but hopefully not to many. So which house is the easiest to get, excluding Breezehome. I've had Breezehome on my first 2 characters and I don't want it again.

I think the one in Riften is probably easiest, just do one or two quests for the jarl and it should be purchasable.

You can use one of the shacks for free -- you'd have to look one upon the wiki, I never kept track -- but following the first couple of steps on the main quest will get you able to buy breezehom (5k) very quickly, and if you do the barkeep's quest out of the first town you run into you'll have done a step in the MQ line as well so more cash for the same work.

The one in Riften would be my guess.

Solitude is too expensive, Windhelm is unreliable and requires other conditions to be met, Markarth requires you to do a couple of quests including one where you'll be facing a nightmarish Briarheart + buddies and can be very difficult and frustrating for a low(ish) level character.

Hmm, well I checked the wiki and they all seem to take quite a few quests to get, except for Breezehome, which I refuse to buy. So does anyone know of a safe place for my items? A certain chest in the DB sanctuary? Somewhere in Jorrvaskr??

Honestly I think Breezehome is WAY easier then Riften's House...

And you basically HAVE to go talk to the Jarl, etc. for the Main Quest.. you pretty much get HANDED a Housecarl and the opportunity to purchase a home in Whiterun.

PLUS, it's the cheapest house in the game at only 5K.

EDIT: My bad.. didn't fully read the OP. Umm.. I guess Riften then? I just bought my house in Windhelm but it was WAY more of a hassle then Breezehome (Whiterun).

It is, but he said he didn't want Breezehome so we pointed him to the next easiest.

Edit: Ninjad by an edit. :D

I only have 15,000 gold anyway so I'm gonna save up for a bit and eventually get Vlindrel Hall or Hjerim. So is there a place in the DB sanctuary I can safely store my things?

breezehome is the easiest, and it doesn't trigger dragons in the game unless you start running west out of whiterun and trigger the cutscene. Stay out of that area after you get the dragonstone for the mage and you can purchase the home in whiterun, without having dragons around. I'm level 46 and have not triggered that cutscene yet.

After having a look at the archmage's quarters, I WANT!

I know, I'm already halfway through the MQ on this character.

You could also marry and move in your spouse's home. Count′s as yours then, container-wise

If you only want a safe chest to dump your stuff in, just take a carriage to Winterhold and join the Mages College. After you get in, you get a free bed and a couple containers.

If you want a house, the easiest, earliest, and cheapest is Riften, as people have said.

Thieves' Guild has chests marked "guild chest" that should be safe (haven't used them long enough to vouch for them personally, but various sources have reported them safe.)

The wardrobes and beside stands in your room in Mages College are. Barrels are not.

The Alchemist's Shack south or southeast of Ivarstead has a bedside stand that is reported to be safe. (rest of containers and house are not)

Riften house isn't too bad to get, as others have said. Do some favors for citizens and the Jarl's quest line (stop the drug trade) and that should do it.

Go http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Houses scroll down to the section free shacks. These are available at the start and this wiki page tells you which containers have safe storage. + they are Free!

If you have progressed in the main quest far enough, the room your contact at the Riverwood Inn leads you to has 2 chest that seem safe. I use them on all my characters and haven't lost anything.

Drelas' Cottage is a perfect free house with two empty containers that do not spawn items. I've taken that house in many play throughs. Its got an enchanting station and alchemy station all ready for you to kill the owner and move in.

Northwest of Whiterun, Its near the mountain foothills near Dustmans' Cairn

QUICKEST/EASIEST:
fast travel to Riften, get yourself an amulet of Mara after the Jarl of Whiterun says you can make a home in his city.
return to Whiterun and find Ysolda in the market, let her know you're happy to bring her a mammoth tusk. (you can obtain one from Belethor most days, or you can go get it the real way)
give Ysolda the mammoth tusk and then ask her to marry you.
when she asks where you'd like to live after the wedding tell her you'd like to live in her place. 50g fast travel, maybe 100g for mammoth tusk and 200g for the amulet. 350g and you have a house and a wife who will give you 100g a day, even for days you're not at home.

SAFE STORAGE:
outside Warmaidens are some barrels right there in Whiterun. I didn't use them for long, and nothing vanished, not even my very extensive pile of ore and gems and stuffs...

good luck. if you don't want to be in Whiterun, the smithy in Rifton has his own home and is marriageable, and there's many other's. Umm... i think in my travels with the amulet on the Innkeep (also male, sorry, playing a female character) in Iverstead is also marriageable and has his own digs.

Well you get a free bed and dresser at the mage college just for joining and taking the tour.

I don't have the pc version of this yet, so I can't say for a fact that its player owned like housing, but you could check the modding forums to be sure, but I never lost anything there and I did the 30 day reset and still had stuff in that box.

Basically takes no time other than going there. The bed is yours, not like the other faction places where you just pick any bed.

As Linksman already mentioned the room at the Mage's College is simplest. If Breezehome is getting old for you the house in Riften is probbly the second cheapest and is actually nicer in a lot of ways.

Alternatively there's a ruined house to the west of the stables at Whiterun, just to the north of the tower where you kill the first dragon, that has a bed and a chest hidden under the broken floor board. I've only used it on one play through but it was safe storage for a couple of weeks until I got a house. One point though was that I was usually stopping by every day or two to store pelts and weapons I was saving up to disenchant so it might not be safe if you leave it untouched for a long time.

I haven't had any problem storing stuff in the TG Cistern. The chests in the circular Cistern room are relatively safe. But I wouldn't store anything in the TG vault or training room. I've seen people post about losing gear stored in here. So try using the Cistern room chests right next to those 2 beds at the entrance that leads to the Ragged Flagon.

If you're heading into the Ragged Flagon from the Cistern, your bed is the one on the immediate left (next to that sewer waterfall). Your chest is right next to this bed. The other chest is immediately across from your bed on the right side. I've always used those 2 chests to store carp loads of my stolen and owned loot without any issues. Also played the entire TG questline doing this without any problems.

The 100% safe route is to buy a house. And the cheapest house is the one in Whiterun for 5,000 gp. The two 2nd cheapest are in Riften and Markath for 8,000 gp each. Of the two of these, Riften has the easier access with one of the house doors being directly accessible from outside the city walls. A real nice perk if you've got a high bounty, carrying a lot of loot and not a TG member. That convenient entrance makes getting past the guards at the front gates a non issue.

Thanks! I'm probably going to do the Stormcloak questline so I can get Vlindrel Hall easily though. It's the house that interests me most.
