Race-specific dialogue options - idea for future TES?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 11:55 am

I've been playing Skyrim from day one as a Khajiit (still my only character), yet it always bothers me that when in conversation with NPCs the dialogue options of what I say don't really sound the way a Khajiit would put it. For example, Khajiit are always speaking quite figuratively, like "May you walk on warm sands", or speaking in third-person, such as "M'aiq is very practical. He has no need for mysticism."

When it comes to RPing, it seems a bit out-of-character when it comes to what I'm able to say to others in the game. A good solution to this could be different phrasing of dialogue choices depending on which race you are - an idea Beth could consider for future TES games. It wouldn't be difficult, seeing as how the player's dialogue involves no voice-acting at all - it's just text displayed on-screen that could be easily re-written.

I'm sure there is/will be a mod out there that does this already, but I'm on the 360 so it'd be great to have this implemented from the beginning.

Thoughts?

I would love it, generally speaking bigger differences based on the race you play would be good, but this at the very least would make the game make a lot more sense, especially when playing as a Khajiit.

Bumping is a punishable crime in this forums, I kid you not.

Otherwise this would be very easy to mod in, since player dialogue are not voiced - obviously.
However I would prefer NPCs reacting to player's race more effectively. You wouldn't be called a True Nord if you are an elf, Altmer characters could assist the Thalmor and hide from them better, beast races would get rude remarks from locals and so on.

Really? I was wondering about it so I checked the forum rules and didn't find anything on the subject.

You can only do it once, and even then it has to be on the third or fifth page.

Anyway, I would love that. Great idea.

Even if your character's dialog text changed based on your race it still wouldn't give everyone the roleplay options they would want. The current system includes General options allowing you to roleplay what your character really says.

It would be much more important to change NPCs talk based on your race. Things like other Khajiit recognizing the player as a Khajiit too. It breaks immersion when most talk to you just like to a Nord.

Yeah I really hated how the other Khajiit would treat me like I was a 'savage' like everyone else.

Which I have, and it was, so I should still be within the rules. I found that section in the rules just then actually.

I've seen a lot of posts saying there should be more varied reactions to different races in general, but at least the player's dialogue would improve the immersion without being too much trouble to implement.

Would that be possible to mod in? I'm guessing that if there were an expert modder out there that happened to be a decent voice actor as well, it would be doable? (albeit a bit time-consuming)
I'm not very familiar with mod creation.

I like the idea, and it could easily be added in the coming DLCs(whatever they may be).

It should be possible, the amount of work kinda depends on the amount of Khajiit, thankfully there aren't that many so it should be doable, it's just the voice acting that will become a problem. You will have to redo every voice file, preferably completely to make sure they have the same voice during all parts of their dialogue.
