Rage going to be a sandbox?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:13 am

Okay, I checked both pages of the forums and see no post of this :P

So, is rage going to be an open world/sandbox type of game? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

It does sound pretty freeform, I'm not sure if it's fully open but at the very least it's far more open than past id games.

I really hope it's more sandbox. They have such great RP/replayability.

I played Dragon Age (the latest one) and Divinity II.. I think it was, and while they were pretty decent games, there's no way I'd play them again.. it's all pretty much the same on the first play through. A Sandbox game can be played over and over and over and doesn't get old for a long time, and are definitely more memorable. See.. I barley remember the name of those other games... lol

Sandbox games are like GTAIV, Red Dead Redemption.

Open-Ended games are games where you can make different decisions that will alter the game, like Fallout 3 and Oblivion (which can also be considered sandbox, because of the open world to explore), Dragon Age and even Mass Effect. Most RPGs are open-ended, not all of them are sandboxes.

As for RAGE, I think it will be as open as Borderlands. A kinda of a large world divided into various individual maps.

I would absolutely love it if it was going to be a sandbox/open world type game. From what I have seen on reviews, it is going to be a FPS (not RPG) that is semi-linear with available side quests. I say "semi-linear" because of the side quests available, but all roads lead to the same end. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm thinking more of like a Wolfenstien game... With larger areas. Not being a Sandbox, but you never know.

Sandbox means a gradual routine of load -- Loading specific routine/value...
Think about how back in the day, miners would seep sand for gold... They used a sand box to shift threw the dirt to find gold pieces/ something they are looking for.

In a sandbox game the game is constantly pulling out character models/pedestrians in GTA - Randomly. The game goes threw a gradual process pulling out a character that is based on a program value.
Value could be based upon, daytime, nightime - or location of that character's loading. Thus the definition of Sandbox.

Fallout 3 only uses a sandbox for some creatures and characters... But I believe it counts the number of creatures/people. Once you kill a lot... You wont see anymore... you will see characters called "Wastelander" or " Primm Civilian" that is a sandboxed character. Randomly generated.

Either way, I hope I can whipe out entire towns... I just like that about fallout3... Some guy smarts off and you just -- BAM -- upside the head... GIMME YR HAT.

Rage has not labled itself as a RPG. You do not create a character and portray a standard role in the game. It is an action & adventure... One character... You might be able to customise the apperance? I dunno w/ better armor or not. They did mention that you will have to befriend some ppl to build to the conclusion of the mission... Meaning you would pssibly go about with one location; do side jobs for Bob the builder and he helps you in turn... while getting you closer to the main goal/quest.

Like I said above, in Wolfenstien... It had a lot of interaction with multiple characters, having ability to do side missions, but not a huge map to wander around in and select the people whom you could help. Either way, I don't think the game will be a massive sandbox... Only sandbox elements will be the mutants, probably. Kinda like in Borderlands you could find more animals or psychos lurking in the corner. However... Id has mention, in a playstation article, that they are really crafting the characters to be dynamic -- Have anatomise movements when fighting. Hopefully that dynamic is not only a routine in motion...

Rage character interaction will probably have characters that all hve names... Either way.. most games have some sandbox feature. Sandboxing is just pulling out another string in loading.

It has a huge world that you can explore (in one of the games many vehicles, no less), but there are also areas that feel more like specific levels. I'm trying to think of a good example off the top of my head, but I think I'm in a Thanksgiving turkey coma. :)

The surface world looks like a compartmentalized open world.

See all the canyons? Most likely, you're not going to be able to climb them, so it's not as though "if you can see it, you can go there".

Rather, the natural barriers will serve as choke points - gateways through which you access enclosed sections of the world. It will still be "open" in a sense, but more like the broken-into-sections worlds of games like Fable and less like Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

I think it would be like a Borederlands style, huge area for vehicle and some area corridor like.

I also want to know if rage is open world. I considerd Assassin Creed 2 open world, yet you could describe it the same way you just described Rage.

I know Rage is not an rpg but other sandbox games like Red Dead and Assassins Creed 2 have a fair amount of stuff you can do, while open world fps like Fry Cry 2 do not, which is it closer to content wise, I know its a fps hybrid of some sort?
