[REQ] Rain and Darker Nights

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:54 pm

I think it would really add to the chaotic beauty of the game if there was a chance of having rain. I mean, yes I know the Mojave Desert isn't really the type of place to get any rain and since the landscape is bone dry compared to the DC wasteland, but even deserts have chances of getting rain. I think it would be nice too if the rain had a 25% or lower chance of being radioactive, but that isn't exactly necessary.

As for the darker nights, I think it would really add to the immersion if nights were almost pitch black instead of being how they are now. I hate going outside at night and being able to see almost everything. I'd like it if the nights were about 50-80% darker.

Thoughts?

Rain wouldn't work well - the TES engine doesn't handle overhangs, roofs, and other things like that at all when rain comes into play. You'd have water falling through the roof everywhere, and that's really immersion breaking. Besides, it's the bloody desert:p

Darker nights, on the other hand, are a great idea. As-is it's way too light out. Would make the Vegas glow look much nicer, too.

This I know, and while it is immersion breaking in that sense, it's something I got used to. As for it being the "bloody desert", even deserts have a chance of getting rain. I mean, the chance doesn't have to be high at all in my case (could be a 5% chance for all I care), I'd just really like to see some rain occasionally.

Huh. To tell the truth, I never even considered how much better New Vegas would look with darker nights. Good point there. :tops:

Lord knows I saw some heavy rains when living in the Arizona desert.

Not more than a handful, and only at certain times of the year, but when it rained I was bailing water with buckets out of the workshop like we were on a sinking ship.

We also got quite a few "undecided" overcast times.

Now, Mojave is drier, but the odd, extremely rare MONSTER DOWNPOUR and the odd gloomy overcast day would fit just fine :)

edit: afaik real life Vegas gets very rare rains that tend to flood [censored] up ...

Deserts get short but very big rain falls, they cause flash tides.

But if there is going to be rain "indoors", I rather not.

Tho +10000 for darker nights. Also perhaps sand storms? (fog + big wind?)

+1 on Sandstorms and (slightly) darker nights... If the rain would work right, some environmental is nice too, but not needed. Didnt it rain in oblivion? i thought it did just fine.

The TES engine CAN stop rain under overhangs, it just drastically slows down the system, so THEY didn't implement it. I'd quote a dev, but the interview was around the time of Morrowind's release. Not sure how a modder would implement it.

The modder-made Morrowind Code Patch actually fixed the rain overhangs a year or two back. So I'm sure its possble without killing the system.

Does anybody have any idea what values I'd need to change in order to make the nights darker? I may just go ahead and do this myself.

Darker nights would be nice (I love Fellout's near pitch black nights), and sandstorms could be a nice bonus. I don't care much for rain though.

Darker nights is a must. At 2am it looks like it's 5am. I was just in Vegas in January. Did a road trip from PA to CA, and drove mostly from 12am to 2pm. It looks like dawn all night. It's terrible.

While I don't have NV yet, I'm assuming the Geck is laid out the same?

If so, then you'll want to navigate to World > Weather, change the Time dropdown to Night and edit the RGB values for Type: Ambient and Sunlight.

There's a neat little tutorial here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6550

If, however, the Geck is somehow different in NV, then this is all meaningless... o_O

While I'm here, just how is the weather in NV? From the screenshots I've seen, there doesn't appear to be much cloud variety? http://fallout.gamesas.com/eng/art/fnv-screenshots1.html. Did they scrap the FO3 cloud textures? And is the weather still static? Basically, would a Dynamic Weather: NV be feasible?

I tried doing what you said, didn't change much. The change I want to go for is to have the horizon dark, nearly black. Right now...it's baby blue. Also, I shouldn't be able to see 3 miles out at 2am. I dunno' what the devs were thinking.

No it looks as if all the FO3 weather types are in there just not used.

Try dropping the brightness of Fog as well then. Strange though, - that should have had an effect. Maybe they have some ImageSpace Modifiers trickery going on as well.

Cool! Really curious to see what's in there now!

Also, hopefully there some meshes available to stir up a quick sandstorm or two. Well, guess I'll have to wait and see.

If you locate hidden valley in New Vegas it actually is plagued by sandstorms that drastically reduce visibility. I would check out that area to see how they do it. If I wasn't swamped by classes I'd do it myself.

Less horrible sandstorms occur at the dry lake beds, too.
