That's apparently what Ralof does, on this playthrough I was actually a little ticked at him because I was doing other quests simultaneously in order to make it seem like all my "business" with the Thalmor in Haafingar was part of the CW stuff there. So I was in and out of the inn in Riverwood a lot. The first few CW quests, Ralof was involved in - but at some point he showed up back at home and he'd just be sitting in the inn (still in uniform) drinking away and, if I talked to him, complaining about how long he'd been away from home fighting the war. And I'd be like, uh, dude, YOU'RE AT HOME RIGHT NOW having a drink and a song while I'm actually out there fighting the war and a bunch of other stuff, so don't even go there.

shows up at the Sleeping Giant, seemingly depressed and miserable. Ralof even told me once, "I doubt Galmar even knows my damned name. But then, I'm not the Dragonborn." Then he just got surly and wouldn't talk to me. Hadvar is pretty much the same way, but he's never said that to me.
