Random crashes after +-50 hours : Fallout: New Vegas

Hi,

I've arrived at the strip and i'm currently doing some quests over there and i'm experiencing alot of crashes lately.
Before arriving there and doing various sidequests i didn't had that many crashes at all. Just an occasional random crash now and them but that's something we are allready used to from bethesda open world games, but now i'm lucky if i'm able to play for 30 minutes or something.

Some people experience more crashes the bigger the save file becomes. Example, over 8-10MB. I haven't experienced that myself since patch 1.1 (I did notice it in the very 1st version of the retail game, no patches at all). If your save files are getting large and nothing else seems to be the culprit...well, sadly, as far as I know, there's no solution it, unless trimming down items you may have stored in containers (if you have hundreds/thousands) makes the file smaller again. I don't know.

But some other things to consider:

-If there are any updates for your sound driver, upgrade those, those are kind of old.
-you could try the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34970 Most don't need it anymore, but sometimes a patch makes it so (apparently) you may suddenly need it. Tho it may have issues w/Xfire.
-uninstall/disable ffdshow (so it doesn't run with NV), it can cause problems for some ppl
-The Strip has various bugs I've read about that can cause crashes, altho I'm not sure about very random crashes...often they're more specific than that. Unfortunately it's hard to give a list since sometimes they're quest or item related. You'd have to look up the 'bug notes' on the new vegas wiki site for each quest you may be doing.

Aside from some heavy armor/weapons stored back in novac i carry everything with me on the fly. My save files are 6.8-7.2 atm
And the things that i'm carrying is regular stuff every one's has: every usefull weapon/some armor, ede's got all of my tools and veronica has a few small things. I have 'alot' of ammo (read, everything that i've found so far) but that can't be the cause either.

I'll try your other suggestions later but its odd that i'm experiencing troubles now. The crashes are random, sometimes it won't load a save file, it crashes during a loading screen (it keeps on loading forever though), during conversations, during combat..

Perhaps i'll try lower down some grafical stuff as well: after when i started playing the game i've bought a new monitor as well, and i had to lower down some water/shadows since it crashed as well back when i was around 20 hours.

edit: perhaps a silly question but where can i find the right sound driver update? i had some difficulty's installing the right ones back on my old pc so i tend to leave that alone if the game's music/sound isn't screwing up ^^

Yeah, which is why the save game issue seemed likely - could be it's starting to affect you earlier than most. Or something about the latest patch perhaps.

If that's an on-board audio thingie, based on the dxdiag: (Driver Provider: Microsoft), I'd guess MS. So you could try a search for HdAudio.sys/Microsoft. Not familiar w/that sound device tho, and if it's old, it's possible MS hasn't put out any updated ones.

Could you provide a bit more detail on the circumstances of the crash? i.e. : where you were, what you were doing at the time of the crash, etc. Things like that will help us figure out what is going on.

in the beginning it usually crashes during loading zone's and when it crashes it usually freezes. But that happened once every 5 hours or so.
When that happened, the roullete loading marker keeps loading and the images+hints keep appearing but if press ctrl + alt + del (=windows management or how is it called in english?) the game stopped working.

But now it also frequintley crashes during regular gameplay (shooting, running trough the town..). Currently doing a white glove sidequest in which i had to talk with the black guy in the steam room. After i talk with him someone come's in and start shooting. When he's dead, i loot his corpse and he has something that i want to give to my companion veronica. Upon clicking her inventory it also crashes. This happened yesterday twice at the same moment/place because my last save file is just before the conversation.

Maybe a question that doesn't need to be posted here, but instead of opening a new thread:
I'm now at the point in the main quest where i need to choose what to do with benny. Do i still have a long way to go from here while following just the main quest. If nothing else works i'll perhaps try finishing the MQ and waiting for a patch or something in the future to complete the rest.

Sry for my double post but i couldn't seem to edit my previous post, its concerning the sidequest which i'm currently doing in the sauna room:

Instead of ultra i put everything on medium and when the conversation with the black man ends, he getss assasinated and when i kill him, the game crashed.
Then i put everything on low, same situation but the game crashes before i can even take the first shot

Seems like lowering down things make things even worse

edit: now apparently i can edit this post
anyway: now i uninstalled ffdshow & did the ".dll fix for ATI cards".
While the ffdshow didn't do anything special the .dll fix made things even worse. My system detected an nvidea 8800 card instead of my ati 5570 card thus the game didn't even start up. It crashed before reaching the main menu. i then deleted the file, set everything to default (ultra high) again. Reloaded an older save but i still can't open up my companions inventory again.

I also tried http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1183083-having-issues-starting-new-vegas-after-the-steam-update/ and steam had to redownload 2 files but that didn't do anything either.

Seems like i needed to put more points in my luck skill at the beginning of the game :whistling: :biggrin:

The only other thing I can suggest at the moment, from my limited repertoire, is to try reinstalling the game, if you haven't already done so. Particularly if you had an earlier version of the game first that was patched w/the new patch. I don't always trust Steam's updater. If you're desperate and haven't yet done so, you could put the new vegas/steam exe's set to "Run As Administrator".

In terms of how far you are in the MQ - depends a bit on who you're 'working' for and how many other things/quests you may have already done (some of them relate to the MQ but can be done beforehand). But in general, if you're at the point where you're told by House to find/get the chip from Benny, it's still a fair way to go from a "blind" point of view (in repeated playthrus w/foreknowledge the MQ can be 'speed ran' a fair bit).

Personaly i'm not a fan of reinstalling things. I've actually had alot of pcgame problems over the ages and reinstalling a game is not listed in my vocabulairy since it was usually resolved in other ways. And i started playing the game +- two weeks ago (according to xfire, i though it was the third week) so i think i started out with every patch out there or at least every patch that steam downloaded.
Its odd but i have to click "run as administrator" manually. If i check the box in the properties the launcher pops up but not the game. It was a bit stable while doing so (read: i could play for 5 minutes this time since i goofded around to see if it worked) but the game freezed on me again during the assasin combat.

Perhaps a long shot but could the "big save file thing" you mentioned earlier have anything to do with me having 25 save files in total..? selecting the save file folder i have 172mb in total, maybe if i deleted half of them and be extra carefull ingame and use the quicksave alot. But on the other hand, its impossible that i'm one of the 'rare fallout players' who's save files are over 7mb.. I admit i've done alot of quests, but i still have to find every location on the map, meet my last companion, do +- half of my current companion's subquests & continue the MQ while probably encountering another whole bunch of side quests.
And tommorow i'll also try skipping the white glove casino chapter and reloading an older save in which i'll continue with the mainquest and see where i'll end the next time.

Oh and i figured out what the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1183083-having-issues-starting-new-vegas-after-the-steam-update/, i had that problem with the accelerated mouse in the menu screens so i decided to fix that little problem in the .ini files.

I've also mailed bethesda personally so perhaps those people could help me out. If they find anything i'll probably let you guys know as well

Some have said that too many saves can start to cause issues (including me, pre-patches) but usually at a higher point. No harm in trying tho. If you back them all up elsewhere first, you can delete all but, say, the most recent two, and the next save you make will still retain.follow the save numbering progression. Thus you can copy the old saves back if you want to load up one from very early in the game etc. without worrying about overwriting the newer ones.

Deleting some save files (and also perhaps running the game as admin) seemed to be my solution since i finished the game 2 minutes ago. I just focuessed on the main quest and so i probably missed the last 20% of the game and i still had a couple of crashes but nothing serious.
And just in the nick of time for the witcher 2 since my CE will be coming in tomorow or something ^^
