random crashes, especially outdoors

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 6:16 pm

i made this thread because i could not find any similar threads that talk about 1.5.26 screen hanging issues.
This has never happened in previous versions. I use 1.4.21 before and its stable. But the 1.5.26 causes random crashes, esp. outdoors. Its not CTD, but simply the screen hangs and then nothing else happens. It happens more and more often. I cant play the game like this anymore.

I disabled all mods that affect terrain etc and only have 24 mods running atm, which are not related to graphics(they are all armors and certain NPC hair change). I also disabled all immersion, AP skyrim and others. Then, i started a new game to test it.

True enough, i got my first crash(screen hang) after leaving riverwood.
When i reload, it works fine. Then later when heading towards rorikstead, screen hang again.
So its definitely not Mod related, as armor and NPC mods dont affect the terrain and i definitely suspect its the terrain that causes the crash.

Has that happened to anyone who uses 1.5.26?

*note, it isnt my GPU nor CPU nor RAM. The game works fine before this update.

Also, i dont use any mods that uses SKSE. Should i run skyrim with SKSE? Its updated to fit 1.5.26 btw. It doesnt cause the crash since i get crashes using the launcher too. But just asking

Only advice I can give is what has been said 1000 times before:
- Uninstall game
- Remove all mod files from Skyrim folder and subfolders
- Delete ini-files
Reinstall game. Reinstall one mod at a time and test.

I get the same issues, but I take it as a new bug Bethesda has unleashed with either 1.5 or 1.5.2. I get a ton of stuttering and occassional game hangs (freezes). I just save every so often hoping a freeze doesn't occur.

I fixed this by deleting my saves to bring the total well under Steam Clouds 50MB limit. Then disabled Cloud entirely for Skyrim. It too just started with 1.5.26 for me. It seems to be a problem with playing a game while your Cloud is full, (when it can't add more data) so it will happen if you load into a new cell. It happens most often in areas like Riverwood/Whiterun Hold because of how large or busy the cells are so the render more I think.

Thats the only explanation I could possibly come up with. All I know is I went from screenhangs every minute, and then not being able to load (never ending load screen) to zero problems by doing the cloud thing.

When you say deleting saves, do you mean from the My Games directory saves file? I only ask as I have archived a lot of mine (saved to a different folder in same location). I doubt somehow that I have managed to meet the 50MB limit but not sure how to check.

Hm, I have 12 MB occupied (of 50) and disabled Cloud today after a complete reinstall without any mods (texture and body replacer mods without esp excluded). My character went out to Bleakfalls Barrow and on the stairs there I had the first freeze, with level 1, in spite of disabling Cloud before. But at least I could load the save this time.

Tigerseye, if you look up Skyrim in your Steam library, rightclick on it, then choose Properties, then Updates, you can see Cloud further below and how much space you have left (at least I think that is the place to look, I didn′t find another one)

Woah, just checked and apparently I have used up 23.65MB and only have 26.35 available...?? I don't have Steam Cloud enabled and I'm not sure I ever have had. And how can I lower the amount of data I have stored? If this is what has broken my game it is totally ridiculous...

Edit: I just enabled Steam Cloud (then immediately disabled again) and now the figures have changed to 8.52 stored and 41.48 available. Hmmm... Makes no difference to the freezing-up issue though.

I think public screenshots also use steam cloud, not only savegames

After I installed and checked the Unofficial Skyrim Patch in the Data Files, the game crashes even before the main menu appears. Can anyone help me with this? :ermm:

Since your problem started after installing a mod, I suggest you ask your question http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1364672-relz-unofficial-skyrim-patch-thread-5/. They may be able to help you there. I'd suggest also posting the rest of your load order (assuming you're running with other mods) and whether or not you use BOSS or Wrye Bash; it'll cut down on your troubleshooting time significantly.
