Random dragon encounters = the answer to "What if cliff

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 10:25 am

I never fast travel. It's just how I roleplay these kinds of game. It's very immersion-breaking to me, personally, to just teleport around the map. Maybe that's why I don't encounter as many.

Same here. That explains why I don't have this problem either, They are rare enough its still a "Wow!" but common enough to more or less keep up with my shouts. My current longest played character ( I have multples and have restarted a few times once I got used to the game because I'm a little OCD) has about 30 hours and has enountered four not including the begining one. My other characters are similar in Dragons encountered.

I do agree sometimes I wish they'd just come down and fight. Some just kind of ignore you and are buggers to hit with ranged attacks.

Wouldn't be so bad if the dragon fights were actually something to write home about. As it is, their AI, is incredibly stupid, and their abilities in combat...both defensive and offensive...severely lacking. The Monster Hunter series, has had more engaging, more challenging, and more rewarding dragon fights since 2004. It's a pretty big disappointment that all the time they've spent on dragons has only amounted to this.

The cliff racers drove the dragons out of Morrowind.

Those over grown cliff racers in Skyrim are the reason I have avoided doing the main quest at all on my 2nd character. I was sick of them killing off whole towns worth of quest givers and I couldn't go anywhere without one showing up anymore at level 50.

My technique for dragons, from level 5, is to high tail it for the nearest point of interest, and let the occupants attack the dragon until they are all dead. Then find a new point of interest, rinse and repeat, until Dragon is Dead.

It's all the more exciting because I turned off the compass, so I have no idea where the next Point of Interest is.

Also, am I the only one that found the RANDOM dragon encounters a bit too....convenient?

Delphine: K let's go find that prophecy wall thing, but we'll have to encounter some Forsworn, AND HOPEFULLY NOTHING ELSE.
Dovahkiin: Gee, a dragon's here. This is totally random and unexpected.

Septimus Signus: K you got your scroll thingy, now you should go back to that mountain
Dovahkiin: Gee, a dragon's guarding the way up the mountain. This is totally random and unexpected.

My first playthrough, I had a dragon encounter at like literally every transition in the main quest. Just bad luck or scripted?
That last one sounds weird, I didn't fight a dragon on my way up to the mountain.. Although, I did fight 2 dragons at the same time in the forsworn camp :D

You can't compare Dragon encounters to Cliff Racers, completely different animals and Dragons don't show up often enough unlike Cliff Racers.

They are like cliff racers, except for instead of being annoying screechers that you have to turn around and shoot every few minutes as you walk across the land, they are encounters every hour or two where you can watch them having epic battles with all kinds of NPCs, causing unpredictable chaos.

Dragon: Hey, man, whatcha doin'? Doin' some quests there?
Dovahkiin: Go away.
Dragon: Aww, c'mon, man! I just wanna be included.
Dovahkiin: Please stop pestering me..
Dragon: We could shout at each other. That's fun, right?
Dovahkiin: I swear I'm gonna murder all of you..

It happens nearly every time I fast travel. I've killed more dragons than mudcrabs.

Weird. I've fast traveled alot, and I don't get swarmed by tham. Hmm.

No, cliff racers were much more annoying. Obnoxious movement patterns, spawned in many multiples, and infested particular regions (which is much worse than random spawn - you knew you'd be covered in cliff racers whenever you went certain places.)

I think Skyrim would have been better if it incorporated Cliff Racers alongside the dragons... I think this game cliffracers would be far less annoying.

As for dragons: I've only found 1 or 2 random dragons. The way to not face stupid amounts of dragons is to not abuse the Wait function.

I'm using the console to prevent random dragon encounters, thankfully it works.
Is there a console command to reduce spawn times, or are you just selecting them in console and typing "disable."

I think this is a big reason. I fast travelled in my first play-through and I got dragons all the time. Once I stopped they started appearing how often I'd hope they would, once every few in game days.

me: So, Skyrim.
guy who doesn't have Skyrim: What are the cliffracers and Oblivion gates this time?
me [no hesitation]: Dragons.
guy: Yeah, I thought it would be dragons.

But actually, and here's the key thing: cliff racers were as bad as possible.

Dragons are slightly annoying, depending on what you have left worth doing with their souls and bones. And fast travel has not been making them swarm me. I actually see more of them when I keep walking long enough for them to get a chance to appear.

Get a fletching mod that uses racer plumes. It helps.

Dragons seem to spawn based on the number of days passed. If you fast travel a lot or have not slowed the games timescale down, then you can expect a lot of dragon attacks.

I don't experience enough dragon attacks to be honest. I never fast travel and my timescale is set to 10.

So to me, the amount of dragons seems pretty good. Not so many to make them boring. But enough to startle me every time I encounter one. What is the difference ? I have "set timescale to 6", giving me in-game days that last 4 hours real-time. And I hardly ever use fast-travel. Would that be it ?

Yes that is exactly it.

I find it fun to run from dragons. It's part of the game (for me anyway) to always look for a place to hide or take cover while I'm traveling. That way if a dragon does show up I know where I can fight him. Also, if it takes to long and you have real cover and not some straw hut they will get tired of you and fly away.

I got a mod that lets you convert 10 dragon souls to a perk point.

So not only do I not mind dragon encounters, I actually relish them.

70 hours in and only 3 random dragons. Don't see the problem that some people have. I don't fast travel or use wait at the vendors.

I agree with your points on Dragon's but since they may spawn on me once every 1 to 2 hours opposed to those damn Clift Racers every freakin minute, I'll take the Dragons.

Yeah, my Dragonrend doesn't freaking work. I don't like to use ranged attacks on dragons because of the save file bloating that the arrows cause, but then they fly around in frickin' circles and never land. I had one attack me outside of an Orc stronghold, and he just flew continuously around in a *very* wide circle over mountaintops and such, menacing the Orcs. I ran into an open area and managed to catch him with a Dragonrend from far away, and the bugger just kind of shook it off. Dragonrend only seems to work on that *one specific dragon*, and then never works right again. It would be nice if I could actually pull aggro on these stupid things and get them to come after me. I'm getting tired of them ignoring my spells and shouts and baking quest-givers.

My main issue with the dragons isn't their frequency (though I have 20 souls and nothing to do with them--time do grab some mods). It's that they keep attacking everything but me. I'd much rather lose the fight and reload than have a quest-giving NPC die (repeatedly).
