Rate the Last Movie You've Seen!

Post » Sat Aug 13, 2011 5:38 pm

Basically the title is self-explanatory. Rate the last film you've seen. Perhaps we can get a good dialogue going about a certain film, so if you disagree with someone's rating, please feel free to respectfully explain why. I'll go first.

Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino, 2009) A+
This is definitely one of the best films of recent years and one of the best I've seen of Tarantino's. The writing is fantastic and the acting is solid, except for Christoph Waltz who is beyond excellent and completely deserving of his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. I really love the way Tarantino tells a story, where he actually tells multiple stories that overlap, and, in this case, converge at the end. The music is great and always works well with the scene and the comedy is subtle and dark. The movie is funny, intense, and unpredictable, and I really just adore it.

Cars 2 - disappointing, particularly for a Pixar film. The tow trucks voice was particularly grating, and it lacked the depth of story and emotional weight I've come to enjoy in Pixar's movies.

However I mostly went to it to give my son a bit of a break while we were up at my in-laws (my father-in-law is ill) and in that regard it accomplished what it needed to.

I also disliked Cars 2. It really lacked the charm and that distinct Pixar magic. Pixar always has a way of appealing to both children and advlts, but I don't think this appealed to either. I didn't laugh once nor did any of the children in the theater. The protagonist was annoying (probably the universally least-liked film in the entire Pixar filmography), although the voice work by everyone else was solid. I especially liked Michael Caine, although that's possibly just because I think his accent his awesome. I will say, though, the animation was beautiful and the race scenes were kind of fun to watch. Still, the film feels like a phoned-in effort, and I guarantee you that Disney wanted Pixar to do this movie because of how well Cars merchandising sold back when the original came out in 2006. It was Disney-Pixar's biggest merchandising success, and they merely wanted to reboot the craze and couldn't give a damn about the quality of the actual film.

I'd give it a C.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

10/10.

It was.. Amazing. I normally HATE Harry Potter movies. But, this movie had action, and was very well done for a Harry Potter movie.

Uhhh... No Strings Attached.

It was okay, more of a thing to watch with your girlfriend. Lots and lots of six.

But the movie before that was The Eagle, which was pretty good.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes:

8/10

For someone who isn't a huge Planet of the Apes fan, I really enjoyed it. For a character who isn't even human, Caesar's character development was quite excellent.

Youth In Revolt 7/10

Pretty good coming-of-age comedy with an awesome cast, and plenty of laughs here and there. In addition to the entertainment factor, I found that I could relate to Michael Cera's character as well, which is cool considering someone told me I sound just like him. :P

Hmm, I think the last movie I saw in theaters was The Dark Knight (10/10); not many movies interest me enough to actually go see them in theaters. However, I am definitely excited for The Hobbit (Dec. 2012); I seriously can't wait.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt 2

10/10. This was really well done and packed with action, especially considering pt 1 which is a 5/10 for me

Rise of The Planet of The Apes-
5/10

Even fantastic special effects (better once the chimp is advlt than when portrayed as an infant, strangely) can't save this bloated plot. While it serves as a reasonable setup for the plotline of the films that follow in the continuity, it's simply too desperate to portray a tragic boy-and-his-dog type of story, too overwritten as evidenced by an uneeded 'B' story about Franco's dementia suffering father, and uninterested in realistic characters that aren't created through CGI (surely Franco's character could have found a less obviously sleazy ape sanctuary to foster his precious hand raised family friend). By the time the movie gets to it's only action sequence of note (the one they show you the bulk of in the trailer, sadly) I was starting to grow rather uninterested with Andy Cerkis reprising his King Kong skillset.
It was watchable, and worth sitting in an airconditioned theater in the middle of summer, especially if you're a fan of the franchise. But the fact that 90% of the audience I watched with had gotten up and left the theater during the extended fade-to-black after the conclusion entirely missing a surprise reveal, indicate the obvious missteps in pacing and storytelling.

Inception 5/5
Crazy, mind-blowing movie with great action scenes. Very fun to watch, but requires a lot of thinking or you will not understand anything.

28 Weeks Later. I held off on watching it because, to be honest, when I first attempted to watch it, the first scene was so terribly shot and messy that I put it up.

Turns out the rest of the movie makes up for that shaky (Literally, and to think that this complaint comes from a fan of shaky cam movies. It was that bad) beginning by leaps and bounds. I'd rate it up there with Days Later, myself. Great drama, great effects, very solid acting and a nice soundtrack. Kind of a crap ending, though.

British animated adaption of George Orwell's Animal Farm (1954)

An unworthy, average adaption of a fantastic book. Leaves out several major plot points of the book, and fails to capture the political side well. The ending was also atrocious and screwed up the movie beyond repair. Great animation though. Very Disney-esque.

No Strings Attached - In a world full of horribly generic Romantic Comedies that all seem to run together after a while, this one shines a bit brighter than the others. While it isn't the best romance movies I've ever seen, it possesses a charm that most of the others are lacking. If you go see it with people, such as your significant other, or even friends who can appreciate some six humor, you'll have fun. Overall, I'd give it a 8/10 rating of "Pretty good".

That book was pretty awesome. It's quite a rarity for me to remember anything fondly from my high school days, but that's one of them. That and Lord of the Flies, but that was more of a traumatic experience for me...Now that I think about it, Animal Farm was creepy as hell, too. And my Social Studies teacher had us watch Schindler's List. That school was [censored] depressing.

Gantz (1)

The movie feels and builds up like a full-length prequel (which actual is, since there is a second movie), in essence, the story is about the maturing of a leader, starting off as a weakling, influenced by his best friend to value lives, growing pass his pride and ego, and learning things the hard way. The secret of the plot is never developed beyond what the characters know in the first 1/2 hour, expect to understand what's going on in the sequel movie.

I remember the seeing the 1999 live-action adaptation in history class. Wasn't a fan of that one. Guess I should avoid the animated version too, then.

I didn't expect a live action Hallmark Channel version made in the nineties to be good at all so I skipped that altogether. Yes unfortunately the animated one suffered from dumbing down the anti communism allegories and such.

My school is absolutely horrific in reading selection. I'm having to read and study all the high school classics on my own because my school has to assign a bunch of unknown crap. Right now I'm in a "dystopian stage" and I just read Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Brave New World, Animal Farm, The Time Machine, and Lord Of The Flies. I finished Animal Farm about a week ago for the first time and just finished Lord Of The Flies for the first time an hour ago (absolutely loved it). Would you be able to recommend any of the film versions? I'm thinking of watching the '63 version but after the awful 1984 and Animal Farm adaptions I'm wary of my vision of LOTF being ruined.

I saw the 1990 film, but I can hardly recall anything about it that stood out to me. Going by that, it must have been quite boring. I didn't even know there was another movie, but going by the (albeit few) ratings it has, it's probably the better one out of the two.
