I'd assume that he, as well as all the other available companions, won't automatically attack any characters who do not try to attack him or the player, because it would seem like a very bad design choice to make companions go off and attack people the player does not need to fight without the player's consent, but obviously, I don't know for certain.

Yeah this could be the case I suppose. You'd just have to treat it like Boon, leave him somewhere away where he won't rip their brains out.

Thats why you have the companion wheel,so you can tell your companion to stay back.
I'm sure i read somewhere that your companion will attack his/her enemy without consent if they see them.
I think it said raul would attack CL if he saw them....not 100% on that or if i've got it the wrong way round, but i'm pretty sure thats the case.
Not sure about friendly super mutants....but like i said ,i'm sure there is cases where they will attack on sight.

No it's Boon who will attack CL on sight. That is confirmed.
We don't know if Raul will attack anyone on sight yet, but yes there's the chance he'll take it upon himself to rid the world of Muties.

Well it isn't confirmed that every companion will have a faction that he/she/it will attack on sight.
Some might dislike a faction but no to the extent of attacking them as soon as they see 'em.

I doubt Raul would be hostile to Super Mutants. It was Tabitha that kept him captive, not Super Mutants in general. Apparently, he helped found Black Mountain. I'm pretty sure not every companion is going to have a faction that they'll automatically attack. Some of them probably take issue with other factions due to affiliation, but otherwise, they'll probably try to make companions as accessible as possible.

Well, my guess would be he is hostile to the Brotherhood of Steel if they still shoot all ghouls and mutated people on sight.

other than that, no clue.

Well, considering I don't like companions in general, this just tacks on, yes theres a lore reason why they will, but damn it, Im not a thirteen year old who mindlessly shoots everything, I might have wanted to TALK to that person he just shot.

I have to say at first I thought my companion attacking an enemy without my say so
was ridiculous
but after thinking about it I've realized this is another way to add in the depth of choices for Fallout
I was gonna make Boone a companion as soon as possible
but after reading that he would attack any CL forces on sight I've reconsidered
The fact that this game made me reconsider my choice really makes me think that
Vegas will be even better than I thought :tops:

How, precisely, is making potential followers real characters rather than "automated gun drones, slaved to the PC" a bad design choice? Seems to me the bad design choice would be giving them no personality or will of their own whatsoever.

It's not the personality thats the problem, it's that if it has a green ticker, some of us like to talk to it, it's completely possible to hate a faction but be willing to talk to it. It's cool they'll have a detailed history, but to use your words, they become 'automated drones' as soon as they see their hated faction, which is ridiculous.

It's not so much that, say, Boone is an NCR killbot programmed to kill Caesar's men, it's that Boone's wife was enslaved by CL and so he hates them with incredible fury - so much so that he'll shoot them on sight for being slaver scum. He's got good reasons for shooting slavers on sight.

Does anyone remember that we only know of four companions at the moment and only ONE has been confirmed to attack on sight? Boone's reason is that his wife was killed by Caesar's Legion and he's former NCR. It makes sense why he doesn't give a flying [censored] about any of them and would rather have them all rot in the ground. I doubt Arcade Gannon or Veronica or Raul are going to instantly start going after [insert faction/race/whatever here] unless it's part of their backstory.

We're seriously jumping to conclusions here with assuming ALL companions are going to be that way. Some companions or more likely most companions probably won't even be affiliated with either of the two big main factions and will just be "neutral". I'm sure only two companions are going to work with Caesar's Legion and NCR respectively.

*nod* But my problem with it is it being "either way automatically"- I can see the over-the-top problem with all followers, for example, having a hated faction that they attack any member of on sight. But on the other side of the coin, I can also see it being sensible (given an appropriate background) for some normally-calm followers to hate a given faction, but be able to control themselves- until they see that one member of that faction who sets them off. Random examples being "That's the one who [killed my brother/sister/loved one, ordered my hometown razed, etc.]"

And to clarify, while I see what you're saying, there's a reason I said "automated drones slaved to the PC."

But to really put the RP into RPG, why not have followers with hated factions/persons have some dialogue at some point where, depending on certain factors, you can:

Find out what person/faction they carry this blazing "kill on sight" hatred for
With speech checks or appropriate dialogue path, convince them "We'll get them, don't worry- but don't open up immediately, we can get something from them and get your vengeance."

Bottom line being, let'em have their own motivations, and work it into the story.

I'm pretty sure it's been said he's Kif from Futurama without any skin.

The worst he'll do is groan and make snarky comments.

If that's the case then I'll have to do a playthrough as Captain Zach Brannigan. :P
