Real World and Fantasy

So one thing i've seen debated a lot is people and how they act when they are "allowed" to play video games. They say games give people an outlet for their more extreme and/or violent tendencies that they ordinarily wouldn't do in the real world. In games like FO3 and FONV i'm a bit of a [censored] with a kleptomaniac style attitude/streak where I will steal everything that isn't bolted to the ground. Friend introduced me to FO3 and on my playthrough on his computer he kept yelling at me *jokingly* to stop stealing everything in the dad's office of the main character. I was stealing stupid stuff like coffee mugs, pencils, bone saws, clip boards, and everything else you name it I would probably steal it.

With that being said do you express yourself more in game or do you conform to standards that you set forth for yourself in real life?

When I first played Fall Out 3, I shot the guard robot thing in front of the first town. He chased me for a while until I got away. I then managed to sneak past him and get into town. Attempted to kill a few guys. Killed one of them... dropped some good loot. The citizens of the town were piling up against me, so I tried to escape town. I left town, but that one robot guard chased me down and killed me.

Yeah... I totally act like this in real life. :disguise:

I generally do most of my killing in video games, it's just easier I guess.

I don't express myself at all in games. I play the most efficient way possible, and don't think about roleplaying or anything.

So I won't act the way I do in real life, but the way I act in the game is totally dependent on the situation.

Yeah, in GTA that's a good way to get money and weapons from cops. In TES and Fallout it's pointless to me.

Depends on my character. If my character is based off of me, then I will act as I normally would. Its more of an outlet for me to actually have an impact on the world with my decisions.

I have no qualms about doing anything in video games. It isn't real life.

I just think it's a shame that even in 2011, there are a bunch of intolerant simpletons out there protesting about controversial themes in video games.

I just play the game. I go for the best ending, best equipment, etc., even in games with choices and such.

More evil in video games than in real life. I typically don't break rules and stuff IRL, but in games I sometimes do. Like in Oblivion and Fallout 3/NV, I'd steal whatever I wanted, so long as I could get away with it. I'd occasionally murder someone too. Usually for no reason at all. Sometimes because they were rude to me. I don't know. I guess I have psychopathic tendencies (in games).

I generally do most of my killing in video games, it's just easier I guess.

Most...? Uhhh, niceseeingyoubye *backs away*

Totally agree with you there it's getting deplorable lately with how people believe they should have control over another person's life. Won't go there since it gets way to much into dark areas so ya...YEA KILLING SPREE!!! Personally i've never gone on a real rampage in games however i've definitely been a jerk to people. Think I remember killing that dang kid who had to leave camp searchlight or whatever it was called like 7 times. *I remember people calling him annoying man or something like that*

Well if I see an NPC with some nice clothes there is a 90% chance that NPC is going to die so I can get those clothes. In real life, I don't care what clothes looks good or not just that it somewhat matches.

I typically role play so my characters usually act in accordance to how they are expected to act given their occupation.

I don't go on bloody rampages and I don't steal everything in sight (unless I'm playing as a thief and even then I have boundaries and rules).

In my fantasies I'm a military person mostly due because I wanted to be in the military in RL, so I live my military fantasy life in the games I play. But in RL I support my troops by waring a cap that has the name of a different branch of the military.

I'm actually quite a lot like myself in videogames. In Fo3 or Oblivion, I wouldn't kill someone without a good reason. Them glaring at me or having an item I thought was pretty was not even close enough to a reason, in fact, it was quite psychotic to me :pinch: Games like GTA are a little different because the characters I view generally have less personality, and the ones that do that I have to kill have a HORRIBLE personality, so it's easier to kill them. On the other hand, if I see an old man complain "I'm too old to be seeing stuff like this!" I end up feeling horrible about it. Sure, he's not a real person, but I somewhat imagine if he was... :cold:

I really don't consider ASB in videogames to be any sort of "expression" or "outlet." Generally speaking, I just do whatever the point of the game is, + I roleplay a bit in any sort of game, + mess around with stuff (shove round pegs in square holes), + get horribly lost.

Games give you the option of doing things you otherwise would be in jail or possibly killed yourself for doing. If you feel compelled to do so given you aren't harming anyone actually living.. why not? I've seen plenty of videos of real people killing real people, so I don't mind if someone is a pixel [censored], a pixel Jason Voorhees, or a pixel Ned Flanders, especially in single player games.

Likewise: even when I try to play an evil character just to see what the alternative dialogue and quests are like, I quickly give up. I find that I usually just end up playing myself; I guess I'm not one for diverse playing styles!

People who like going on killing rampages always worry me a little, even though "it's only a video game" and all that.

I think of open world games as a kind of insect ecosystem with different types of bugs. I don't feel much of a need to harass it like I don't go around poking anthills in real life. However sometimes it is fun to cause some chaos just to see what happens.

I find it hard to play evil characters. My favorite evil character I have had was a Lawful Evil Tiefling Fighter/Thief/Assassin/Shadowdancer in NWN2. Lawful Evil is easier for me to play than Neutral or Chaotic Evil.

I don't go on random killing sprees in real life. I don't really think about what I do in video games, it's not real life or real people (unless it's an MMO then I behave better and am polite to people)

Sounds about right.

So... you've never went on a killing rampage?

Not since I was ten, and tried killing a town in Ultima 1. (Of course, that was a top-down, eight-color game with a 280x192 resolution. It was 1980, after all.) Since then? Nah.

I tend to play "good". Have a hard time playing evil (which screwed up my plans to try a very different playthrough in FO:NV... I couldn't side with the Powder Gangers in the first town. And I'd certainly never be able to cooperate with the Legion.)

Oblivion.... never "rampaged" in a town. Across all my characters, I think I've only gotten credit for four "murders", three of them on one character. Either friendly fire accidents, or those slaves in the arena who somehow count as murders. Only seen Lucien spawn twice, killed him immediately both times. Generally don't "steal" anything either... only rare things (like that Nirnroot in the IC). Get plenty of loot from dungeons, enemies, and guilds I've joined.

Fallout 3, I feel a bit more open to doing "grey" things (like taking out the Family.) But I still never even think about nuking Megaton or working with the Slavers. Also more willing to steal "rare" supplies from people, at least in the beginning when you're short on ammo.

Packrat in games, packrat in real life. But I buy all the stuff I'm packratting IRL. :D
