I've realized something...

Post » Sun Sep 11, 2011 9:36 pm

Apparently especially on the internet. I enjoy things. I like a lot of things, but it seems a lot of people don't like things. By things I mean movies, books, whatever. People always seem to whine about how much things svck. I will pretty much enjoy anything unless its mind-numbingly stupid/offensive. I can't really describe what I'm trying to say, but its just this feeling I get. I feel like I'm one of the few people in the world that actually enjoys almost everything. I'm happy this way. Anyways, that's pretty much it. Do you enjoy things?

Looking back on this post it seems really stupid, but I still want to ask the question. Oh well.

It's easier to talk about stuff you dislike than about stuff you like.

Person A: I like Thing.
Person B: I like Thing too!
End conversation.

Person A: I like Thing.
Person B: I vehemently disagree, and will proceed to tell you why.
Person A: You're wrong, and I will attempt to disprove your points in detail.
Conversation goes on for pages.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0la5DBtOVNI&list=FLU2xwzXgcnbrmgCcAeb1pZA&index=10 has been posted around here before but it's still relevant.

I'm not sure what it is, but in the past 10 or so years, it's become the cool thing to not like anything and feel as though everything was better in the past. This applies to anything and everything. It becomes obnoxious after a while.

I try to enjoy things, but mostly I don't. I try my best not to whine or complain about things I don't like, especially on a forum made for those things.

Perfect example, the Skyrim General Discussion is a huge downer for me. I'm actually genuinely excited (which does not happen often at all) about Skyrim, yet I go there and I feel like half the posters there have a problem with every single thing about Skyrim. It ruins my excitement and frustrates me. I try to avoid going in that section of the forum these days.

Nevermind, I can't really seem to find a way to put what I'm thinking into words in a way that makes sense. I'll try an example: I enjoy the new Transformer's movies. I also enjoy the old cartoons. Everyone seems to hate the new movies, but I enjoy them. Who wouldn't enjoy giant robots beating the crap out of eachother? And even though I can acknowledge the humor and stuff is stupid, it still gets a chuckle out of me sometimes. Also, the Star Wars prequels. Sure they're not nowhere near as good as the OT, but I can still watch them and enjoy them. They haven't ruined Star Wars for me in the way its seems it has done to so many people. By this point in my typing this I've realized I'm just complaining about people having different tastes than me. Sorry.

EDIT: Oh wow, a lot of posts came up in the time I was typing this. But, yeah, what Velorien said is pretty much what I mean.

This. And you're a lot more likely to remember the second conversation rather than the first later on.

The thing is, on the internet you are dealing with a lot larger cross section of the population than you do in real life, therefore you are going to get a more diverse difference in opinions. Couple that with the fact that it's a lot easier to describe how/why you dislike something than it is to describe how/why you like something, and you've got your answer.

It's like ratings: when something is good it's easy to not uprate it, but when something svcks to you you want to downrate it. It's why you see all those "DOA" reviews on newegg.

This is the internet, where you come to complain about stuff.

Take Trip advisor. Name the most obscure, out of the way hotel you can think of - someone on trip advisor almost certainly spent the worst night of their life there.

Good for you! Before you know it, you'll be just as cynical as the rest of of us!

But sarcasm aside, there's nothing wrong in enjoying what may be butchered by the "others". It's all just taste and preference in the end.

This. Even for things I like, I discuss the flaws far more often than the virtues.

Also, in response to what I expected this thread to be about: "It is not things that cause us pain or pleasure, but our reactions to things"
