I Really Hate The Cap On Xp!

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:41 pm

Hated it in Fallout 3 and despise it even more now. I haven't even been to The Strip yet and I'm capped at level 30. If I'm not getting any more xp why should I bother with any of the side-quests? I've already got a ton of caps so that's no motivation. Surely it might have been an idea to give out much smaller amounts of xp so that you would max out closer to the end of the game.

For the stories, maybe? I thought that was kind of the whole point in playing anyway.

Motivation?

Playing the game and finding out the backstory.

Unless you are THAT unmotivated.

This needed a new thread, because there aren't already 10 like it.

Every game is level capped. be it world of warcraft or modern warfare.

Not only the back story, I played for hours before realizing I'd capped out, I was just having so much fun just exploring.

I think everyone, at least once, tries a character who goes everywhere, maxes everything possible, finds all the hidden goodies and does everything. You know, the old uber toon. And if you play this character you're going to hit the cap about a third or half of the way through your run (My first playthrough, doing just the MQ, put me at LVL 18). I just finished a playthrough like this, and for my personal tastes I missed the levelling. Luckily the story is strong enough to keep you entertained after the character stops growing (although NV gives us the challenges as compensation -- you still improve slightly after capping).
For me, now that I've seen everything except a few locations I skipped on purpose, my next characters will not even attempt to be uber -- I'll pick & choose where to go and try to time LVL 30 with the game ending. That's what I ended up doing on F3 and I made new discoveries every time, plus it has the benefit of letting you continue to level, something I miss after I cap. Since playing the main quest won't put you at LVL 30 (in my experience, at least) there's still lots to explore.

Exploring is just plain fun.

One of my playthroughs will be a Paci-mat. A Bean Bag Shotgun wielding diplomat.

Hooyah.

Or do you wise your last 2 level goes for ever? So once you hit level 25 or so you only gain 5xp max and 1 xp max after level 28?

If you're on PC, there are mods that slow experience gain, and there are mods that raise the level cap.

I somewhat agree. I remember hearing how getting to level 30 was a hard accomplishment before the game released, but it felt like I got it in no time. Like someone said on a previous thread, I wouldn't mind gaining XP after level 30 just for fun. No perks. I would still love it. There are so many quests to do that you don't have enough levels to spare.

On the other Leveling thread at http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1140082-i-hit-the-level-cap-too-early-needs-some-change/

it was suggested by Phil that there could be a "setting in the Options that lets you control how much XP you get for tasks and quests. Just three settings would do, Minimal, Normal and Plentiful. Minimal to level half as slowly as normal, and plentiful to level twice as quickly."

I don't know if this is possible or how difficult but I'd love to see this happen. It would cover most people and since we're playing within a limited number of levels, we could manage our leveling better depending on our style. I explore a lot on my PS3 and would rather not level too quickly but other players prefer to level faster. This could help us all.

Should be very very easy to do this, as a few very simple mods are already out that perform that function. All that would be needed is to add an entry to the menus.

I imagine something like this is low priority, however.

I was going to argue against this, claiming the extra levels as being gratuitous.

But then I realized that most of the stuff in the game is gratuitous and my argument fell apart.

I think I would like the cap removed. Oh, well. Stuck on a 360 so none of that for me.

I just hope all the complaining about this (along with "OMG it ENDS!11!1!!") doesn't ruin the game like Broken Steel did to FO3. :sadvaultboy:

Are you mad because your at the max level early or because you cant cant lvl up any more...?

Try playing the game for fun, not power gaming threw levels, listen to what the npc's say, dont just click, click, click, run to nav point kill, pick up something run back to quest giver.

After my first char, i hit lvl 30 in less then 5 minute with any new 1 i make. Its easy on the comp "~ advlvl" do that 30 times and bam time to go explore.

I'm confused, so bare with me. The accumulation of experience and the subsequent increase in character power is more important than the story? I'm pretty sure this is still an RPG and the point of the game is the story and not being bad ass or having all the money in the game world.

I don't pay any attention to my progress in levels, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I hit a level with a perk. Why, because I am engrossed in the story.

I don't know if I should feel old, because RPGs used to be about the story or just disappointed.

Well see, it still is an RPG...but once Bethesda made it first-person, they "revitalized" the series by attracting hordes of powergaming FPS munchkins to it. So now you've got this warring dichotomy of fans, split between people who knew Fallout long before Bethesda got their grubby paws on it when there was no arguing that it was an RPG, and "new Fallout fans" who will loudly and openly insist that it's an FPS "with some RPG elements thrown in." Same thing happened to TES with Oblivion, as the system was *koff* "streamlined" by cutting the number of skills and optimizing gameplay and combat for short-attention-span FPS style play.

Excellent point. So disappointed it is, on more than one level.

again i would suggest an option at the start where the player can elect to recieve less experience for quests completed.

quest experience is monstrously too high. that is if you actually kill anything. only case where it's useful is for people who want to complete without killing anything.

seriously what the hell have you been doing to reach level 30 before even reaching the strip? you are in the massive minority. i reached several sidequests and locations before reaching the strip and i think i was about level 8-10. were you farming every single inch of the map to gain experience? again - you sir are the in massive minority - the level 30 cap is designed to stop uber powerful characters stomping all over every enemy in the game. get this - 99% of players don't play the way you do. they don';t [censored] around - they get to the strip BEFORE level 30. thankfully game desingers don't cater for people like you. mod the damn game if it that's big of a deal. i LIKE the cap because i don't want the game to be a cake walk. i've clocked 25-30 hours in my current game and i'm level 18, and a very happy camper.

I got to the strip at level 8, but had to do a ton of sneaking, almost died like 5 times, and used a couple fo stealthboys to sneak by Viper gang members. It is very possible to hit level thirty before reaching the strip. Not everyone wants to rush the main quest you know.

lol, but there kinda is, only that you cant level higher only by taking advantages in either the soul trap glitch in MW or simply going to jail alot in OB, but I doubt TES V will have such glitches to get past the level cap. Which would be what ever level it takes to max out your skills (FYI to the non tes players).
