Realtek low sound fix

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 5:23 am

I found a fix for my problem with low sound with a Realtek chip:

1) Open up the Audio control panel
2) Go to MIXER section
3) In the RECORD section - where it says "Realtek HD Audio Input" - switch this to "Realtek HD Digital Input
4) Now switch back to "Realtek HD Audio input"

Remember to turn your sound volume down before re-starting Skyrim!!!!!!!

If it works for you, bump it to top please

Can't really follow your steps. There is no such thing called Audio control panel with mixer and recorder section on my computer.

If you've got Realtek chip, there should be a utility program that came with your motherboard that fulfills same functions as I listed

my mother board is a Gigabyte, so your utility may be different, but you should be able to switch recording inputs back and forth

Well all I have is this to control and change sound settings: http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3746/8030.Realtek-Sound-Playback-tab.png

If you can tell me what to do there, then maybe I can follow your steps. Not much idea right now what you mean with switching recording inputs.

Well, I can confirm that the OP's method actually works, although my Realtek options are completely different.

Under my "Recording" devices, I had to "Show Disabled Devices" to see something called "Stereo Mix." I enabled it, then went into its properties and checked "Listen to this device." I then disabled it again and rebooted. Incredibly, I now have to turn my volume DOWN when playing Skyrim.

I don't know if this means it's a Bethesda problem or a Realtek problem, but big thanks to the OP!

hlvr,
what your screenshot shows is the Windows audio page, you want the Realtek audio control panel. Although it sounds like even the Windows panel MAY work if you switch your selected input off and on.

I'm guessing it is actually a problem with Realtek not initializing correctly by itself - some programs initialize it, others dont'

Well, can someone help me follow the steps?
The only places to control audio settings I got on my comp is the normal sound control panel (shown below), and Realtek HD Audio Manager (which has the exact same setting options as the sound control panel so it's useless).
Here's an image of the sound control panel: http://oi42.tinypic.com/j8e8fn.jpg
Here's what the Realtek HD Audio manager looks like: http://i41.tinypic.com/r8w1tj.jpg

So... where can find the steps here? I'm pretty lost.

This is how the Digital Output tab looks like: http://forum.videohelp.com/images/guides/p1964979/real.jpg

Except on my computer I got no Digital Input tab as you see in the image.
I'm guessing what you want me to try is to enable Realtek Digital Output as "Default Device". Right now I got my "Speakers" as Default Device. Right?

hlvr,
I think that somehow you need to change the input to "something else" (and I don't think it matters what else, but I'm just guessing) then switch inputs back to whatever they were originally

I re-read my response and see that I goofed when I said digital OUTPUT, needs to be INPUT section.

Can you 'click' on the digital icons on lower right, and if so what happens?

Clicking on the digital icons on the lower right just takes me to the Digital Output tab. Does nothing...
I'll set Digital Output to Default Device and see what happens. I mean, that's the only setting I can find that even remotely resembles to anything you did.

On the top with the three tabs, right click on "Digital Output" and set as default device. Took me a couple of mins before I thought of trying that, lol. Im about to give it a testrun.

Edit: Nope nvm, that seems to be totally the wrong thing and shut off my sound entirely.

Need to set it back to original way - seems to need to switch INPUT to another source (digital or ???) and then set it back to somehow properly initialize the Realtek chip

Realtex has several different products : AC97 (older) and High Definition, and apparently 2,6, and 8 channel versions.

Not sure if mine is new or not. I got the mobo last year. I had the low sound only on skyrim, enabled the option in the pic and it works fine now.

I'm guessing that everyone elses problems were unrelated to mine.
