recently retired my character, need new playthrough style

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 3:14 pm

So, like I said before, I would retire my character when I had done absolutely everything I could with it (complete all faction questlines, main quest and daedric quests, reach level 50). Well, it has come to that stage, and it is now time for Kratos to put down his bow and daggers.

I'm now looking at a new playthrough, but I don't know which direction to go about it, and would like to know which is the most fun to play as. Should I got 2H warrior? Or pure mage? Or any type of hybrid class (excluding thief/assassin ecause I already did this)? Or anything else as a matter of fact?

One handed Sword / Shield Warrior ? Thats what ive been using and my guy is an absolute machine. Kills anything in his path and never backs down from a fight..

I quite fancy doing a stelthy character next. :) sounds like a fun way to playthrough Skyrim hunting from the shadows.

It's fun at first, but when you are able to kill everything in one hit, it gets quite tedious and boring (IMO anyways).

Yeah ive heard a few people say this takes the fun out of it. I dont really fancy the idea of a Magic character, then again if im careful with my Archery skill tree i could try and avoid the one hit kill thing. Then again i dont know if it can be avoided the more you level up. Might give it a go when i get bored of my 1st character.

"The Gandalf" - sword in one hand, staff in another. You're a damn powerhouse up close if you get your hands on the proper weapons, especially ones with Soul Trap(Dawnbreaker is also very good and easy to get relatively early on. It's also unleveled, so you can get it as soon as you can fight your way through the quest.), but you can still anything at any distance with next to no weapon switching. You can also spam higher-level destruction spells early on without even investing too much into Magicka, let alone abusing the enchanting system. Also, beards.

Maybe, maybe. That actually sounds quite fun, and unique.

I would try a pure warrior with 1h/shield. Definitely a change from sneaky type classes. I am not a huge fan of 2h, it feels very sluggish to me. Very powerful and satisfying smashing peoples heads in with warhammers though.

The only class I absolutely cannot play is a 2 handed warrior. They are just way too slow. But the Gandalf is pretty fun, as is a Merchant Class. You never fight, but you find a companion and you make sure they have the best gear available. Not as much fun as it could be due to the lack of random potential followers, and the fact that only rarely will people actually finish off your follower so it's not that high of stakes.

I don't know -I spend so much time on my characters, that sometimes I just want to get back on my first character, open the console and start scripting perks in. I'd call it, the level 81 syndrome... just too much effort to be left behind.

Pure mage preferably using spell in 1 hand and staff in the other. I'm doing that and it's pretty fun. Inever really tried out staffs before and they are not that bad.

If you're looking for a challenge...

I played a Vampire Illusionist with a self imposed level cap of 35, in robes and a hood with only Enchanting and Restoration to supplement it.

Purely passive build, make them fight themselves... but be sure to get the Vampire super perk in Resto.

If you're looking to have fun and still have somewhat of a challenge.

Use your shield as a weapon, and your free hand can supplement Shield Charge with any magic of your choosing.

I cannot stress how freaking awesome Shield Charge is...

Pure merchant playthrough. Invest in Alchemy, Speech, Pickpocket, Smithing and Enchanting. Have only one goal - to make as much money as possible.

Knight of the Divines, heavy armour, one handed, restoration and block. Try to avoid killing men, and purge Skyrim of the Daedra and undead!

Ranger / rogue. Archery, one handed, alchemy and block.

Pacifist thief. Sneak, pickpocket, illusion, etc. Use illusion for invisibility and calm.

Spellsword/Battlemage. Heavily armored, Sword/Axe in one hand, Spell in the other... Best way to play in my opinion. If your a thieve type, Nightblade is a excellent choice, basically a thieve/assassin who uses magic.

I really don't like playing as a vampire, it never suited me, but an illusionist...maybe.

I'm not playing as a Thief/Assassin again, already did it with my retired character. But a battlemage, maybe.

I'll probably play a travelling Khajiit merchant when I'm done with my second playthrough, sorta as a gag playthrough.

I guess I'll play as a 2H Nord Warrior who wields a battleaxe, but still indecisive as of yet. However, if they added combat on horseback, then I wouldn't mind creating a RIder of Rohan type character, and if they added spears... well that would just make my day.

I wouldn't really recommend playing a pure mage unless you want to stay in for the long haul. Seriously, right at the beginning, being a pure mage kind of svcks. It only gets interesting around level 20+ as far as I can tell. Personally, I like using two handed weapons. They just feel like they have so much power to them.

I believe you get most out of this game by being a hybrid when it comes to combat. Use every possible method of hurting your enemies.

Use bows in sneak mode to get critical hit while perhaps adding a poison to the arrow like weakness to fire
Fire few ranged spells
Summon a meat shield like flame atronach
Dual cast flames spell and just empty your manapool on the enemy
Swap to shield and sword/axe/mace or go 2-handed and finnish off any enemy alive.

And you can combine shouts somewhere there all so.

Playing stealth characters isn't about the fight, it's all about the lead up to the kill, but I would only recommend getting the assassin's blade perk in stealth tree and the minimum to get to it, otherwise stealth becomes too powerful.

That was what I was saying hurrdurr

And after some thinking, I decided to settle for a Nord 2H warrior who wields a massive battleaxe (inspired by Gimli from LOTR). He will be a stormcloak soldier, and I've got a whole backstory set out for him already. :D

I tried starting a pure mage, but began having trouble in early levels being unable to take care of enemies once they closed.
My little Breton girl needed some way to defend herself when the magic ran out, so she picked up an Ancient Nord Greatsword and has used it since.
At level 40, her main skills are 2 Hand, Conjuration (necromancy), Destruction and Light Armor with non-grinded Smithing and Enchanting.
Softens enemies up with ice spells, zombies and runes, then cuts their heads off when they get too close.
My favorite build yet.

There are quite a few ways to bring the battle to your terms. Most of them require you to use a combination of the available magic skills, be a respectable alchemist, think before you shout and last but not least, look past the first 3 standing stones you encounter. This, is what in my opinion, makes the pure mage in Skyrim, a very interesting scenario.

Elder Thu'um master!! You can build a Library and spend your days reading books! And then on quests, nothing but shouts! Good luck...

I think a 2 Hander would be a good choice, as the playstyle is very different from a Sneak guy.
