Recommended Perks for Block

I've switched from 1H sword + spell to 1H sword + shield for my character. What do you think are the Block perks I should be investing in?

All of them. All of the perks.

Seriously, go for shield bash. You won't be disappointed.

I like to move round the back of Frost Trolls in slo-mo, then spank them on the bottom with a power bash.

The only one you really need is 'Deflect Arrows'. The perk is bugged and blocks all damage by 100%.

What? No it doesn't. I have that perk and I get damaged.

Its bugged, but not to that extent. Getting Deflect Arrows automatically grants you 85% effectiveness in blocking from every kind of weapon attack, not just bows. Some people may not even notice much of a difference, but it does make Shield Wall obsolete

Definantly go for Elemental Protection- kinda hard to ignore the +50% damage reduction vs. Fire, frost, and shock damage just by raising your shield.

The slow motion thing is pretty fun. Just hold your shield up, enemy will try power attack, run around behind them attacking and get a few hits in before the slow motion even ends. They won't know what hit them. Literally since to them you are just moving very fast, like a chipmunk tweaked on turbo.

I had all of them bar the shield bash perk and didn't regret it at all. The block tree is worth every perk for a shielded character.

I like the right side of the tree but I'm reluctant to go up the left side because I don't want to be overpowered. So far I haven't taken the arrow blocking one and I'm still on the verge of being too powerful.

Sorry, I meant 100% block, not 100% damage.

The only ones that you NEED to have max effectiveness with a shield are Deflect Arrows and Quick Reflexes. There are many other perks that are very useful, though.

all of them are great. i would go for the left side first(because of elemental protection), but definetely not ignore the right side.

Basically every single one, excluding maybe the sprinting knockdown (although still useful) and the slow time one (just glitches on me and ruins the game)

Elemental protection certainly doesn't make you overpowered vs mages. You still can take a good bit of damage from powerful sorcerers; my last character had legendary plate mail and a heavy armor skill of 100, plus high block skill with elemental protection and he still took a good bit of damage from higher-level flame attacks even when his level was in the mid-forties.

The only block perk I didn't take was the slow time one.

Armor does not mitigate magical damage at all.

As others have said, all of the block perks are powerful (well maybe not shield wall), but you don't really need any of them to be effective with blocking because the shield bash of a completely unperked blocker will stagger most foes and interrupt spell casters. If you are just switching to shield from spell, my advice is to take it slow and enjoy unperked shield blocking for a while before deciding whether to perk it and worrying too much about what perks to take.

The slow time is one of the most useful perks.... and armor rating has nothing to do with magic damage.

Useful, yes. Overpowered, maybe. I suspect that's why some forego this perk. I sometimes prefer not to take it because with practice you can often tell when an opponent is about to unleash a power attack and a well timed shield bash will interrupt it. So I view the slow time perk as somewhat unnecessary and somewhat overpowered because once you take the perk, you don't have to watch for signs of a power attack anymore, all you have to do is hold block and wait for slo mo to kick in . . .

I just look at it as compensation for Bethesda's poor clunky combat system. To each his own.

I cannot recommend a shield build until deflect arrows is fixed. Both elemental protection and the faster movement perks look great but I refuse to be godlike with a shieldjust by taking 1 perk at skill level 30, its sad that this bug still exists.

Apart from the possibly bugged deflect arrows perk, all the block perks are good.

It's possibly the most useful combat skill in the game, and I don't think there is one perk that is pretty much useless....it's all good.

I had a lot of success with a shield and spell build, and any one handed and shield build is a lethal combo. With shield bash and power bash, you will never fear any single melee threat again...
