Recording your voice over a mic, while not hearing it yourse

Post » Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:26 am

Hey all

I'm wanting to dabble in Lets Play videos, but i'd like to know this for other things like making commentaries and help videos.

I've found plenty of videos teacing how to record your speaker and mic together by simply having you mic sound play through the speakers, rather than muted as you would normally have it. Thing is, I stumbled upon that when I was first setting up my mic years ago, and it was horrifying when it started to echo.

Now I use headphones echo isn't a problem, but it would be distracting (and alter how I spoke) if I could hear myself as I played/talked. I've not seen any guides mentioning this.

Is there any way to 'mute' my voice to my own ears, but still have it be recorded with the game audio? I know others record it seperatly sometimes, or I could just play without puttng my headphones on, but these are less than ideal methods.

I've got FRAPs and CamStudio as recording devices btw.

I would really appreciate any help that can be offered, surely soneone ahs some experiance and knows how this can be worked around.

Edit: Speeling

You should record your voice with a program like http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ in the background while you play the game ( recording game sound and video with FRAPS ). It'll take a minimal amount of effort to crop out the bit of audio before you started playing.

another idea might be to invest in headphones that have their own volume control

Thanks, that is an idea, but fits more in the 'not ideal' catagory.

Now this might work well, if there is no system-side option, but may I ask if you know of any good brands? My mic is pretty crappy, quiet and picking up background noise, so I could do with getting a decent new headset.

I record video with my voice over it. I use FRAPs, Audacity and headphones with a mic. In some games that support voice, all I have to do is record with FRAPs and it records in real time (that's what I did with Alien Swarm). With something like Project Zomboid, I just ran Audacity, hit record, then went about playing the game and recorded it with FRAPs. Then I put the voice and the gameplay together in a video editor (in my case, Sony Vegas 9).

Only problem is that if you're playing a higher intensity game, having yet another program running might slow your computer down.

I like very much, thanks Rusty. =D

SpankyTheElf, may I ask exactly how you align the sound perfectly though? How can you be sure to crop the audio at the right place? It may be a silly question, its just I can;t seem to wrap my mind around it.

Make a very visible, very defined action on screen at the same time you make a distinctive, defined noise. Use this to sync the audio, then edit it out.
