Relationships - opposite and/or same six?

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:12 pm

Hi guys, devs and Chris in particular!

I'm really looking forward to the release of Fallout Online. The franchise is awesome, and I think this might just end up being my first MMORPG, a genre that never really appealed to me before.

Anyhow, I'm curious as to how player character relationships will be handled in this game, if at all.
Will there be any options of registering your relationship with another player such as in-game marriage? And will this be equal, watered-down (i.e. civil unions) or simply unavailable for same six relationships in the game?

I know Fallout has a history of allowing marriage, both opposite six and same six ones.
As an LGBT gamer, this is an important issue to me.
The way I see it, you either implement it for all types of relationships, or you don't implement any types of official relationships - anything else would be pretty bigot.
I have great faith in you, and I hope you can reassure me that that faith is not undeserved. :)

On a side note - if you do implement a type of official relationships, such as marriage, will there be any other restrictions - such as no interracial couples, or enforcing monogamous contra polyamorous marriages?
And while we're on the LGBT issue, I might as well ask this, for curiosity's sake; will the gender options only be binary, or will there one or more non-standard or transgender options?
Thanks for your time. :)

Cheers!

There are no plans for a marriage mechanism in-game between PCs at launch. There are plans for wedding rings and clothes at or near launch for RP purposes, but those won't care about gender and players can do with them what they will.

NPC/PC relationships won't care about gender (similar to the way the previous Fallouts have handled it).

That's great to hear - thanks Chris. :)

I feel that my last question went unanswered, however.
Will the gender options at character creation be binary, or do you intend to include more options than that?

is it REALLY that important? this really can wait until launch time. Learn a habit, it’s not wise to upset a mutie.
But sir, nobody worries about upsetting a Human.
That’s ‘cause Humans don’t eat people when they get irritable. Mutie’s are known to do that.

Yes, this is important - at least to some of us.
I honestly don't see a problem with raising the issue and asking the question, be it pre- or post-launch. How does that do any harm in any way?

Media, including games, do have certain responsibilities, or at least need to acknowledge that they contribute to and affect society.

Imo, it's a worthless aspect to a game. Marriage and gender this and that whatever. Just pick your gender, and that's that.

THAT... is a really important question when it comes to quests and such :P being a girl with 7 charisma can seduce a guy to give you richer rewards, but being a girl with 3 charisma will make him give you shit payment for the job xD, well I think it would be neat :P Someone with lesser CH can lay more points on combatskills while one with higher charisma has to give up combatskills, THIS however is only true if they hold on to the old character build system.

But for all purposes on marriage/relationships, it can be done purely in RP if that is needed, or at least in my eyes it can. Image

I might be wrong but..wasnt there, in Fallout 2, a woman you could (as male char only) talk to till she nearly forced you to spend the rest of time together? As female char there wasnt such an option to her, was it?^^

So previous fallout games cared about the chars gender for NPC/PC relationships :P

Yes, in modoc. A high charisma character (both male/female) can get her (Miria) as a wife, also she never leaves you -.-' Well, you can divorce her in New Reno by father Tully if you want to, but that is permanent too :P

OR you can get Davin, her brother, if you want too. The effects are the same and yes, both are bisixual. Image

with all the other REALL issues, isnt this a waste of time? Learn a habit, it’s not wise to upset a mutie.

The only Real issue will be what hardware i′ll need for the final game and how much will it cost me to play, everything else is virtually.

But how important a feature is depends on opinions and those are different for everybody so, no probably it isnt unimportant.

since you will be able to do it in game-play anyways (even if it's supposedly forbidden "somehow"), id say it ranks dead last.

unless youre planning on using this as some sort of hacking tactic. (there, i said it, since everyone else is too cowardly too)) Learn a habit, it’s not wise to upset a mutie.
