Relationships

Fallout 2 let you marry a guy or a girl and bring them along as companions. I know that since prostitution is in you'll probably be able to have six but I'm talking about being able to marry/date someone. Would really bring depth to it. I know it probbably won't get into the game right away as they are almost done but a (Free) DLC adding this as a quest/extra feature would rock.

If it works without feeling cheesy or out of place, yes.
If it rips off Mass Effect or Fable then hell no.

Hooray for shotgun weddins!

I actually never did the shotgun wedding thing.
Their dad or uncle or whatever was always so pissed at me for some reason that I just high tailed it outta there and never went back.
He's scares me.

You could do it in Fallout 2. As long as it doesn't go more in depth than that, then it could fit in. I wouldn't use that feature at all if it was in though.

If they would add in the shotgunwedding stuff, I'd also want the ability to explain some huff about flowers and bees to talk my way out of it to come back.

Wouldn't they also have to take Casual/hardcoe mode into account?

Say, Casual you get your little love quest, get married, have another follower, yay.

hardcoe: do quest, get new follower, and if you go 24 hours without initiating conversation your spouse forces dialog and starts ranting about you never listening, and not caring about their needs.

Let this happen about 5 times and they leave, then you get hunted down by a slick greasy-haired New Vegas divorce attorney and served with divorce papers.

Then you have to go to court where a judge gives them half your caps and items (entirely random selection, you have no say in what to keep) and for the rest of the game anytime you go into a casino you run into your former spouse living it up with the divorce attorney. If you don't show up, they get everything.

If you're allowed to own multiple houses and you do own more than one at the time, they're split too- and now your spouse is shacked up in what used to be your house with the attorney.

Now that's hardcoe. :D

Meh, relationships in video games always seems so tacked on and useless.

I'd rather date an actual woman.

Why have them as a companion? Why not instead, have them live in your house on the Vegas Strip and it is your responsibility to bring home the radroach meat, so to say?

No, it probably wouldn't. It doesn't have depth unless it's made deep. Fable 2 had marriage and kids and look how deep THAT was. No thanks.

If you want to date and marry people play The Sims, not a post apocalyptic role playing game (Unless you just want to marry someone, then play FO2)

The last thing I need in the Mojave Wasteland is backseat sniping. I probably won't partake, and if I do they stay home.

When I think of Weddings I think of being forced to marry that girl in Fallout 2 when her father caught us together which was funny.

When I think of dating I think of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas where I was forever having to remember to take all my girlfriends out because I would lose status with them every 15minutes....which wasn't funny, or even good gameplay.

If its in New Vegas its already in, I just hope if they put it in they remembered to make it funny or tastefull without being annoying.

Exactly what I said in the first half of that post you quoted- they're always tacked on and useless.

I mean, they always boil down to either being incredibly repetitive- take Grand Theft Auto for example: "drive me to the same restaurant every day on the hour (as taking me anywhere else will get you a sharp disposition drop) and then the camera can pan over my apartment and you can hear moaning that even porm stars think are fake", or just plain uninteresting. If i'm lucky, there might be some kind of unlockable item at the end of it, but it's never worth the repetition and boredom that comes with playing matchmaker.

Which is why I'd rather a real relationship. I mean, I'm all for engaging and relatable characters, but making me do the same task (giving gifts ala Dragon Age, selecting "Romantic > Kiss" like in The Sims, or driving an NPC to a restaurant GTA-style) over and over and over and over and over again doesn't make for good gameplay.

One of the reasons I play video games is to escape from life, including whatever relationship I am in. For those brief few hours I don't have to be nice, watch what I say, pretend to be interested, or care about what her mother thinks.

I think Mass Effect 2 implemented their "romance" pretty good....

On topic, I don't want to see this feature in the game at all.

But no one forces you to do it. You always have the option of just blowing a potential love interests brains out if you don't wanna deal with them at all.
I think we should have more options not less. Give the player more to do ya know. And if it's done right it would be great yeah. Done wrong and maybe we ignore it.
