Reload Hack?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 12:25 am

Sooo, I just found another weird mistake in the game. Clip memory is erased once you de-equip a weapon. Ie. if you drop the gun, equip a new gun etc, once you re-equip the original gun the clip is always full. While this would just be a weird fluke, it messes with gameplay immensely. Simply unload an entire clip, bring up your inventory, select a new gun, re-select the first gun, ta-da! Full ammo - instantly.

This might not make a big difference for a quick 9mm clip change - but the 6 seconds it takes to load the .357 or .44 magnums sure takes a long time. Or if you have a gun in poor condition, it will always jam upon reloading - avoid it entirely by not reloading.

Plus, it detracts from the *immersion* factor - every gun is nice and conveniently loaded and ready for you, the post-apocalyptic traveler.

Has anybody else noticed this?

I've noticed it, never considered it an issue. Drawing a weapon is usually the slowest action you can take.

If it ruins your immersion, don't exploit it. Truth be told very few games at all have decent clip memories. I'm more annoyed by the fact that Fallout doesn't recognize the concept of a chambered round (any reload of a clip-load gun where there is at least 1 round left should result in having clip size +1 loaded.

You miss the point. There is no drawing involved. You simply select one weapon, then select another. When you exit the inventory, your original gun is just sitting there in your hand full of ammo because I de-selected it and re-selected it.

Also, I think plenty of people are sick and tired of hearing, "just don't do it" in response to a bunch of hacks/bugs/poorly thought our design. Plus, with this problem, I can't actually "not do anything." Every time I select a weapon it is fully loaded regardless of what state I left it in. I can't do anything about that. Furthermore, when in combat I am often switching weaponry, ammo types, etc. Therefore I am constant "hacking" the reload layout, and have no choice to not do so.

It just feels dumb, aside from the whole overpowered thing about never having to reload things.

Furthermore, every modern FPS game since Counter-Strike, I know of keeps track of magazine amounts, even in immensely large multi player matches with multiple users dropping and picking up weapons in game. I love grabbing for a weapon only to realize it's mag is empty.

Although ironically - while on the subject - it svcks even worse when you are "honest" and allow the reload action to being but then have no way to stop it. I sit there mashing my inventory button to use a stimpack as my character sits there poking cartridges into his gun while getting super sledged to the face.

TL:DR - reloading blows. Figure it out.

Ok, so in some situations, you have to go out of your way to not do something to avoid a hack./bug because it happens during NORMAL gameplay. In that situation, yes the phrase just don't do it is annoying. However, this is not something you do during normal gameplay. There is no reason, OTHER than to perform this hack, to go into your inventory, switch to another weapon, and immediately switch back. On occasion maybe, if you were deciding whether to go to another weapon and then thought bettor of it. But certainly not in the normal course of things. So yah, the phrase just don't do it is PERFECTLY apt in your situation. You have to go OUT OF YOUR WAY to perform the hack. So stop whining and just stop doing it.

As for doing it when you legitimately are switching weapons, well unless you switch weapons a ton, it is easily explained since when out of combat you would normally reload all your weapons If you only exploit this when you legitimately change weapons, it shouldn't be so glaring because it happens maybe once a fight. I say once because you would need to start with x, switch to y, switch back to x (that would be 1). You'd have to then switch back to y (or z or whatever) then back to x to make it happen again. Must fights would be over by that point.

Also, FPS only let you have 2 weapons and maybe a a pistol. That is a LOT less to keep track of. You could have dozens of weapons, especially considering the repair factor where you will have a dozen of the same weapon. You couldn't easily just keep track of a few, you'd have to track them all. Perhaps they could implement a system where they keep track of the last two weapons, but then you'd still get this if you use more than 2

I never noticed this. There has never been a time where I would go into my pip boy, change to a weapon and then change back. If im changing to a different weapon, im going to use it.

I dont see an issue here at all.

Ok, first of all, you need to stop calling it hacking, because it's not that. It just isn't. If you don't like how it affects game balance, fine, but it doesn't make it hacking. That implies you are making the game do something it wasn't designed to.

Second, marlock is 100% right. There is no reason for you to go into your inventory, switch it out, and switch it back other than to use this. "Just don't do it" is really a valid response in this case. If you lack the self control to avoid doing this on purpose, it sounds like you really just want to do it anyway. So really, stop doing it.

Outside of combat, well, if you're outside of combat for more than 20 seconds it would stand to reason you'd check your weapons anyway. And all the games that "remembered" your magazines on your weapons... most of them don't let you carry 20 weapons at once. They're two-weapon games

If you really enjoy being punished for your lack of foresight as you so claim, keep hardcoe mode on. I'm sure you'll die soon enough because you forgot to stimpack BEFORE those 3 giant radscorps hit you 6 times.

I agree that *usually* "just don't do it" is easily countered with "just build it right"

In this case it does seem to take going out of your way though to use the exploit (not hack, so you know, hacking is physically changing the game state with a memory editor, exploiting is using an advantageous bug).

On the other hand I agree it should be fixed, and it could be easily enough, modern computers are powerful enough even if you have 50 weapons an extra 250 operations for a 5-operation state save and an extra 50 integer-sized variables for your weapons' clips wouldn't be overload.

On the other hand, this is a minor bug, I never even noticed it, I doubt most people would notice it, and it takes going out of your way to exploit it. Arguably any effort you save in ammo procurement is replaced by the risks involved in constantly going in and out of your inventory mid-combat and risking being incapacitated while doing so.

This one falls firmly in the "sure it's a bug but they have far bigger bugs to worry about" I'd honestly be dissapointed if that's the one thing they chose to hotpatch as opposed to all the game-breaking problems.
