From the nVidia Guide:

Now, let’s go through the steps to revert back to uGridsToLoad=5 should the tweak prove too demanding for your system, or if Skyrim becomes unstable:
  • Backup SkyrimPrefs.ini, Skyrim.ini and your Skyrim ‘Saves’ folder.
  • Right click on Skyrim.ini in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim and uncheck ‘Read Only’ in the file’s properties.
  • Load your last save game.
  • Press tilde on your keyboard, most commonly placed directly to the left of ‘1.’ If it is elsewhere, the keyboard symbol should be ` or ~.
  • In the now-visible in-game console type setini “ugridstoload:general” 5
  • Hit Return on your keyboard.
  • Type saveini
  • Hit Return on your keyboard.
  • Type refreshini
  • Hit Return on your keyboard.
  • Close the console using tilde.
  • Create a new save game.
  • Exit Skyrim.
  • Delete Skyrim.ini in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim.
  • Reload the Skyrim configuration tool.
  • Close the tool.
  • Re-tweak Skyrim.ini if necessary (and SkyrimPrefs.ini if it has since been modified).
  • Reload Skyrim and your most recent save.
  • Enjoy the game.

If there is another Skyrim.INI file in your Skyrim\data folder, you'll problably need to delete that to revert to UGridsToLoad 5.

I got this too, There was another Skyrim.ini file in the skyrim/data folder that I had to delete.

This worked for me:

Look for a .ini file in your data folder and delete it. It could have the name of one of your mods.

Set ugrids back to 7, load your savegame, minimize game, open your Skyrim.ini and edit the ugridstoload value to 5, maximize game, open your console and type "refreshini" and save your game.

Thanks to Tywele.

Thanks to Tywele.

That is the only method that works for me. The "accepted" method always results in CTD when trying to load any save game.

The "saveini" command adds entries to your skyrim.ini file that alter how the loadscreens are rendered. It's easier to restore your previous ini file or simply delete it than hunt down these settings.

Yup what JMC002 posted is the way i recommended when they changed the way the game deals with ini....

this way you don't end up with a weird skyrim ini files and color changes to logo and such... and it just works faster.

Thanks i deleted that skyrim.ini from the date folder. now works. But i can't load the game without the grids set to 7.

I've respected the guide above, then deleted the skyrim.ini in documents and the Data folder, started the config. tool once again, and started the new savegame created and no, the game crashes.

You'll need a clean ini file and then to put the ugrids back to whatever setting it was for the particular save (7, etc.)

Guys - There is such an easier method to lowering your ugrids. The recommended method from tweakguides is terrible. I posted about this last month here:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1308173-reverting-to-a-lower-ugridstoload-value-a-better-way/page__view__findpost__p__19678066

In short:

1. alt-tab out of your game (if you don't have any other apps open to alt-tab to, press control-alt-delete and start task manager which will get you back to windows)
2. open Skyrim.ini, modify ugridstoload=5, or whatever lower value you want. SAVE the file
3. alt-tab back into your game
4. open the console (~), type refreshini - this will reload the ini settings into Skyrim, with the lower ugrids value
5. close the console, save your game
6. restart Skyrim and load your game

Works EVERY time. No hassles. No backup files. No deleting anything. Really should be a sticky IMO given how many people screw up their games using the 'recommended' method.

I use it all the time to test out different ugrids, play for a while, roll back. Never fails me. I think the whole "ugrids are evil" conspiracy is just because people can't back out without screwing something up in the traditional method. It doesn't have to be this way.

If there is a skyrim.ini file in the skyrim\data folder (in Program Files), delete it.

all you do is ...

delete your skyrim.ini file...

let the game recreate it.

mod the skyrim.ini file with ugrids 7

then start the game

load into your save game

when your in game... alt-tab out of the game

go to the skyrim ini file again and modify the ugrids to 5... save the file

then alt tab back into skyrim and hit the console... refreshini

then save the game..

exit the game.. double check the ini file... make sure it's ugrids 5

then load back in and load the latest save.. you WILL NOT be able to load the previous saved games with ugrids 7 still

You'll have to do this for each and every one of the ones you want to convert back to ugrids 5

Ok, works, but how did you know the ugridstoload=5 is the default grids implemented by default by bethesda ?

because that is what it is that they use...

I think they may use ugrids 3 on the consoles though... not entirely sure.. that's debated..

it doesn't hurt to view this thread ~> http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1274926-ugridstoload-skyrimini-comparisons-and-explanation-default-57911/

By default a skyrim.ini will contain a line with "uExterior Cell Buffer=36" and if the pattern is maintained that means that the ugrid would be 5 since the buffer is ideally (ugrid+1)*(ugrid+1).
