Reporting Methods

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:39 pm

Well long story short, I was playing Modern Warfare 2 on the official servers through steam (open up the game through Steam, hit play, and then chose a game type, type of server). The room had at least 2 hackers in it one with a aimbot/wall hack and another with an aimbot, like turning a full 90 degrees to the side, iron sights, lock on to my center mass with calculated aim within a fraction of a second.

So I go searching for a report function only to find that there isn't one and steam uses VAC something like that where it is an automatic system. So I go to the steam forums and take a look at the VAC aka anti-cheating forums and apparently many people have problems with it where it isn't banning the hackers or rarely dose and has a tendency to occasionally ban an innocent player.

So fans of Brink here is my proposal to you, What type of reporting method do you like?

Personally, being able to report players from in game really helps with finding and stopping the hackers and cheaters, coupled with a room vote kick to get them out of our servers.

Sure yes both can be abused, but sometimes I see these as the most effective ways of dealing with hackers and cheaters.

Well maintained servers with their own community formed around them. The regulars gain the trust of the refs and admins and self moderate by reporting suspicious players. Or run my own server and do as I please.

An ingame report button would be the most easy to use. But I think they should place a warning for people who constantly report, like:

'You are about to report player X. Please make sure that he's using cheats or hacks before continuing. Abusing the report button can result in a ban."

Just an example though.

Report buttons would still be abused. It would be so over abused that it would make itself ineffective. If a multiplayer game has more than just a "quit" button people will find a way to ruin it for others. They can even do it with pong or tic tac toe. Add voice chat and it's even easier.

Why are almost all the VAC problems with MW2?
I`m guessing it has to do with there being no dedicated servers and 3rd party programs turning off VAC
The banning of innocent players happened somewhere around 2 months ago i believe but those people got unbanned and received a free game.

My reporting method: Just keep using VAC and call in an Admin when i see something suspicious, it works fine in tf2 and other games i play.

Yes I know it can be abused, but can you think of a better way to get hackers and cheaters reported and banned from the game?, because like VAC hackers can use 3rd party programs to bypass it.

After the guy got 2 nukes in a row it kinda killed the mood for me that night.

With MW2 not having dedicated servers, it works just like the ps3 and xbox versions. You pull up the game, hit play then go into a matchmaking system for the game mode of your choice.

That's why for brink I really want a in game report function, so that we can quickly report and ban hackers and cheaters so they won't ruin our game.

i think there should be a built in system, as reporting would be abused

if it's with dedicated servers, there has to be a vote to kick, vote to ban option.
reporting would be abused, but this would be harder to abuse.

we can't leave it up to VAC, because it indeed seems that VAC can not ban some hackers(i even have a feeling hackers divert the ban to innocent players, seeing as VAC seemed to have banned innocent players)

Because absolutley no-one is going to report people for "cheating" and "hacking" just because that person beat them and offended their belief that they are the bestest uberleet player in the wurldz. -.-;
Vote to kick and vote to ban does seem like a much better way to go. Especially since with 15 other players you'd have to have at least the majority think you're cheating or hacking, and not just one whiney person.

Vote kicking can easily be abused. I can't count being kicked for 'hacking' because I listened for footsteps or because I'm pretty skilled when it comes to turning around and still killing the opponent.
