Restart or keep going?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:25 pm

So, I have this awkward hybrid fire mage/rogue/werewolf character that doesn't really accel in anything because I had some ADD when placing skill points. I feel like it's just all over the place. Currently 40 hours in at level 32, should I restart or keep going?

That's a personal choice. If it's not any fun for you to play anymore, then start over with a new character. If you're still enjoying the character, then continue.
My first char had her initial perk points spread out a little more, but after about 10-15 levels I found the style of play I enjoyed, and concentrated my remaining perks appropriately. Played that char about 165 hours before starting a new one.

That's up to you, shouldn't need reassurance from us. That's the beauty of TES games to me....no matter how many times I start, I find the experience fresh, especially when its a new devoted class. I too started with an ADD character, but normally thats how all my TES games start. I get a feel for the game, the mechanics and then I make a more dedicated character the second, third, fourth, fifth time around.

If you have a need to complete MQ in your first character go for it, the meat of the game is everything else, the MQ just a bit of a distraction really. IMO id say go for it since you can do whatever you want.

The game is not really designed for one character to do everything. Even though you can have one character do everything, it is better to play through with two or three different characters, each focusing on something different (Mage, Warrior. Thief for example).

You got to level 32 in 40 hours? It took me over 100 hours to get there. Sounds like you don't have much trouble leveling up. If you start another character, you do not have to delete the one you have and can always switch up characters when you feel like it.

I generally do decide a Role-Play to use before making a character and chose to only put perks on 3 or 4 trees. Keeps the character more focused that way.

I couldn't play the way the OP has their character. I'd restart.

I messed up by putting perks on slots I don't use. Now I only use perks to match my style. Plus it's a lot of my life wasted if I was to restart. Surely just continue and put perks to match your style.

i wasn't necessarily looking for reassurance as much as tips from people that have played 150 hours and regret their early game decisions etc. I think i will probably take the general opinion and start a new more focused character. Maybe this time I won't click through so much dialogue too...thats probably why I level so fast?

Everything you do will contribute to player level....getting hit will go towards what armor your wearing (light armor heavy armor) making more armor and enchanting it will go towards enchanting and smithing, hitting with a sword goes towards one handed etc. The more actions you do the quicker you will level.

If you are looking for a more paced, immersive experience, then go with the flow of the world. When you first get out of Helgen the person you followed out will tell you to split up. Ignore him, take the walk to riverwood, listen to him talk, take in the scenery and go from there. Do things with more purpose then just levelling up or finding the next cave to fill your map. Rely on your own potions and do alchemy, you will have a need to forage and hunt. As an above poster mentioned limit your perk trees and focus your character on specific skills, that way you arent a jack of all trades and use the skills meant for your class to cope. Example, being an archer and only using archery and sneak perks and not using one hand weapons as a back up or being a mage and limiting yourself to a couple schools of magic like conjuration and illusion.

Sounds silly to have to put limits on your character but its how the game is designed to avoid cookie cutter builds (though they exist for those that want to optimize a specific character type) and to avoid experiencing way too much content at once or being able to breeze through it.

If it was not for the Dragon Shouts, i would ignore the MQ in future plays.

However, not being able to Shout will increase the challenge of the game.

So many more to consider, aura whisper for sneaking archers, disarm for mages who get a little too close to those two handed buggers, and who doesnt love unrelenting force for well everything? lol While you may not use every single one for numerous situations, you can always find the one that fits your character the best. Though there are times when I whip out the odd unused shout for specific situations.

Edit: stupid double quotes

I feel like that moment at character creation will really tell if I want to restart or not...it's so hard to make a decent looking character in this game. Especially, compared to Aion...this is always something Bethesda has struggled with in my opinion, although it is a huge upgrade from games in the past

Try past character creation....once you get released unto the world of skyrim after helgen, your mind will start racing and you will be eager to start building yourself....just resist the urge to power level and find enjoyment in more of the mundane things. Can't tell you how many hours I spent just picking herbs and hunting deer lol

Huge upgrade in terms of characer appearance since oblivion but would like to have seen even more tweak options. I usually start with a preset face and tweak those features from that template. I normally end up with a decent looking character, though I find men to be easier to make attractive then the women in the game, could just be me being nitpicky. ORcs IMO have been the greatest improvement and love their look in this game compared to past.

Until you get the hang of it, the Facegen is not the easiest thing to use to make a character. What I had to do was get a mod that put number values on the chargen screens for hte face and then use values I found on the web.

See this for some help

http://j-u-i-c-e.hubpages.com/hub/better-looking-characters

Also, if you are on the console, there are some websites out there that have faces and then screen shots of the sliders so you can get an idea of what they did to make them that way. The nice thing is, the most aesthetically pleasing faces all have similar main traits. So, once you have done one nice looking one, the rest are easier.

im afraid after my obnoxious amount of time playing competitively in LoL, SC2, WC3, WoW and Aion I am unable to spend hours hunting deer and picking herbs. I'll probably end up making a rouge named http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&q=akali#/d3folp2 running straight to the thieves den quest line to become nightingale assassin, steal all the things after maxing stealth, max blacksmithing by making tons of daggers, max enchanting through loot/find, then craft the bestest gear and be a real terror in skyrim. Dragons fear me~~ atleast thats the plan?

ya, it really depends on if you're having fun. or, do have another character in mind that you do want to create?

i learned awhile back to stop creating do all, power leveling, all guild, grinding type characters. i limit it to specific characters and roles and they do not have to all do all of the main quest.

If you have a real need for potions ( i use them and alchemy is my income on a couple characters) the mundane turns into need which satisfies those mmo urges. But if you are choosing a class only to become the most powerful thing in existence, then the fun of restarting isnt really going to be there because its basically what you did the first time except your rushing less perks and skills and quests. Its good to have focus on your character, but having too much focus on all the things that character would do based on their class might blind you from the other little fun things you can do or find enjoyment from. Leave the words rush and max out of the equation and you will have a better experience IMO.

You mentioned clicking, which means you're on a PC, so there's always console commands to reallocate perk points and attributes with. Just try to play fair and remove as much as you add to avoid cheating. Or don't, it's your character.

I fear that using consoloe commands, much like heroine, will become a dirty addiction that will ruin everything...

Dear god yes it is lol Once you start you lose that wall you built up to 'do things properly' as I put it and it builds up. It starts out with the few hundred extra gold you need but don't see any harm by adding it via console and avoid hunting it then it turns into grand soul gems for enchanting and the cash to go with it etc etc.

Feeling the satisfaction of buying the first house by doing honest work in all its cliche goofiness is a great feeling and keeps you motivated to not cheat. It sounds so silly now that im writing it but its something that some pc users im sure deal with lol

should I restart or keep going?

Getting rid of classes hasn't stopped my tendency to restart the game because I'm not happy with my character. Several versions later, I'm now happy. My advice is if you are asking the question, you are not happy with the character, so make a new one.
