A retail experience I wont forget anytime soon

If the manager was that "nice" to you guys (strong-arming you into taking the insurance), I can only imagine that he's even more unpleasant for the workers.

It'd be a perfect situation for an employee to:

Raise it with the manager, point out customer service etc.
If that fails, contact the person above him, mentioning things like "bullying" "unpleasant working environment" and "dissatisfied customers".
If the manager fires them, contact the relevant government agency/sue 'em/whatever.
If fired and applying for other jobs, they could actually turn it into a selling point, as it would demonstrate initiative/leadership, a solid understanding of customer service... Just a matter of having the skills to spin it right .

So you couldn't buy the game without the protection? I don't think they can refuse to sell you something just because you didn't pay extra for something else.

What I do when they're pushing these offers on me is just make it clear I don't want it, showing them no interest at all.

They can, but its a bad idea to do so. If they made it an official policy and stuff, it'd be completely above board and legal... but they'd start loosing customers pretty fast, and it might even affect staff turnover.
