Retexture a spell

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 5:28 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm currently trying to create a new spell. I want it to be a dark purple/black stream which works similar to flames.

Now I tried to retexture the projectiles and the hit shaders using nifSkope but I can't figure out which texture to change. I've retextured the firecloak-gradient, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Does anyone know how to properly retexture a spell? I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you,

I would also like to know. In addition, is it possible to isolate parts of certain effects and remove them, such as the particles on the frost rune explosion that swirl around for about a second after the explosion is finished?

I assume to get the texture, you would take the gradient listed in nifscope, open it in photoshop, and swap the reds for dark purples, and in my case, I would swap the blues for deep reds. Then save it as DDS, and go back to nifscope, somehow change the references to the old gradient to your new one then export to nif. Then point your projectile at that model.

This is a wild shot in the dark. Hopefully someone else can point us in the right direction because I too would like to know.

Hi there,

That's exactly what I did, I changed the gradient and then changed the reference. At first I got some kind of weird alphamapless particle effect and now nothing happens at all. I think Midas created some custom textures for his spells?

Yea that is kind of my barrier to entry for this kind of thing too. No idea what the heck an alpha map is and all that, but I know you have to worry about those things.

Anyone? We'd really need help with this one. I'll keep working on it and as soon as I'll find out, I'll post the solution. Hopefully someone can help and shorten the way. :)
