Revisting Metal Gear Solid 4

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:30 pm

Since the PSN is down I've been playing some of my older titles and decided to revisit metal gear solid 4.

MGS4 has aged so well. I'm still amazed by how great this game is. Go snake :)

Anyone else return to MGS4 lately?

I tried to but I don't feel the same magic I did when I played the game the first time :( I think it's because I already know the entire story and I know the in's and outs of it as well.

MGS4 an older title? Maybe if you only count this generation :P

Anyway I haven't played mgs4 since I got the Big Boss emblem a few months ago. I do play Metal Gear Online regularly though(Well not since PSN have been down, but when it's back up I'll play again).

SNIP

Just not a brand spankin new title. I always think of it as older cause I didn't get into the game until 2010 when I bought a PS3. But it is no pitfall by any means

Going for the a no alert playthorugh on big boss hard.

Couple questions:

When you mess up and get an "alert" status and you need to restart, does killing yourself and selecting continuing still give you an alert status on your record?

Do you actually have to quit to the main screen and reload a save to retain a clean record? Gettin tired of the load screens.

For no alert should I just kill the guards? What's the biggest diff between tranq dart vs suppressed ?

Well I beat it twice when I first got it, so I haven't gone back to it yet. But all MGS games age well. I was playing the first one the other day. :P

How is MGS4 and "older title". It's a freaking 2008 game.

My brother is playing MGS2 at the moment.

I addressed that in my above post (#5), weren't you reading? :) But older as in not a new release.

But seriously any tips for the no alert playthrough?

The best tip I can give you is to use your tranquilizer pistol as much as you can or the Mosin-Nagant if you have it. In fact, that is pretty much the only gun you should be using. You should also use smoke and flash grenades to full use, as they really are quite useful. And camouflage is your best friend, use it as much as you can. Keep the face mask on at all times. Go carefully, save often, and don't take someone out if there's a risk of someone discovering the unconscious body.

That's crazy! I've been thinking about starting a new playthrough recently. I think I will now.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a great movie!

haha. I actually finished on normal yesterday. That ending cutscene is like 45 minutes!

I'm about to wrap up the 1st lvl with no alert / no kill. :) Fun and challenging!

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a great movie!

Nah, it fails at that. How many movies does anyone know where the last couple of hours are nothing but a tacked-on exposition dump?

That aside...skipping the cutscenes, it is a very solid game, pun not intended.

But seriously any tips for the no alert playthrough?

Don't abuse the Solid Eye in quiet environments. Whenever it's on, it emits a light humming sound that some enemies might pick up, and that FROGs most definitely will.

I think that's only for the Night Vision mode of the Solid Eye. Normal and zoom operation don't generate the hum. But yeah, never use the solid eye's night vision mode in act five.

Haha, that's not too far off for a typical MGS game. However, I always felt the strongest point of MGS gameplay is the replay value and sheer variety. There are often many ways to complete each challenge in the games, and I think that's great.

The radar is also included in Solid Eye's function, and it hums while active.

I can't play one of them, I have to start with Metal Gear Solid and go in order of release. Impossible to do otherwise, it would be like watching The Return of the King on its own.

Great tip, I didn't know that. I was wondering why sneaking w/ the ipod was easier, thought it was just the lower stress lvl.

Anyone play the multiplayer?

Is that some sick joke about PSN still being down? lol :)

When I first got the game in 2010, I tried but I remember it not working. I didn't know if it was because people had already moved on from the multiplayer or what. I remember it took FOREVER to install for some reason.

Anyone put in solid hrs in multiplayer? Single player mode is so good I'm barely interested. :)

No, i'm just curious if anybody plays this online. After I beat the game last year, I briefly checked out the multiplayer, but never got into it.

I followed this guide for the Big Boss emblem:

I play it regularly. Not now since PSN is down, but usually when it's not down I play. :P

I haven't revisited it in a while. I have so many games I still need to beat. However, I would love to have a marathon of sorts and play through the four main Metal Gear Solid games probably in this order: 3, 1, 2, 4.
