Road Trip, Vacation, DC, and BethStudios!

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:38 pm

So next month I'm heading up to Washington DC to watch the Cowboys devastate the Redskins before marching into the playoffs. (Yea...) I'll also be there touristing it up the old fashioned way, hitting museums and monuments and the like. I might even try to get a job or two, or find an apartment (guess those are important).

Anyway, one of the things on my list of potentials is to swing by Bethesda Game Studios and take the Gooberhead Fan Visitor's Tour. Then again I might not, because I don't even know if there is such a thing. Do the Studios allow visitors?

If so:

Have any of you ever been?

Was it worth it?

Would you say that it's worth the trip up to the Studios from DC?

Any other recommendations of things I could do or try while I'm up there? Thanks guys.

Tour or not, you could just wait outside until quitting time, then follow Todd home.

My company is giving away free trips at our Halloween party. I was thinking, if I won one, I would go to DC and spend an entire week just at the Smithsonian. However, perhaps 1 day at Bethesda Studios would be awesome.

Patiently awaiting an authoritative answer.

I'm pretty sure they don't just let you walk into their office (since it's chock full of secret material), but you could always just show up outside the building and hope to catch a dev walking out :P Rockville is a pretty cool area, if not quite as touristy as DC proper.

Depending on how long you're here for, you could drive up to Annapolis - it's really quaint and kind of European.

I assume that place would reek of old chinese food and body odor. It is crunch time which means several Q & A guys have already suffered under weeks of sleep deprivation and are a bit anemic. In fact I hear thats where they go the idea for the ghouls in Fallout 3, the testers will attack on sight so its probably best to avoid the office around this time of year.

Edit: I would also like to offer a suggestion of what you could do. My family went on a lot of trips when I was younger and up until I graduated, one thing that my stepfather was always able to do was hire a taxi driver to give us a grand tour of the city in a unique fashion. For 200 bucks we got to see Lincoln, Washington, FDR, Arlington, the Capital building, the Iwo Jima Monument, the WWII Monument and some other buildings that weren't amazing to look at but had a lot of history.

- It was night time so many of these monuments were lit up in all their glory, as a bonus we also learned some pretty cool things from the cabbie one particularly interesting thing was that the man who designed the D.C layout did not include a J Street ( All the streets in one cardinal direction are named with numbers and the other cardinal direction is named with letters (but I cant remember which) this is because John Jay, a politician at the time, slept with the wife of the cities designer.

-Also we were shown the hotel in which delegates and groups would meet to discuss issues and exchange money, this is why they are called lobbyists today.

I would advise doing this in whatever city you go to. Just make sure you establish a flat rate and ensure by your first stop that they cabbie is a decent guy and wont get you killed or try to gip you. For instance our first cabbie of the night didn't know how to get to certain monuments in the quickest way and almost rear ended a tour bus. On that note, you will ultimately save money because paying a cabbie 200-250 bucks for a tour that is much more exclusive and interesting than a 50$ per person tour bus( we had a family of 5) is worth the risk.
This memory is really a great one, nothing like looking up into the dome of the Jefferson Memorial on starry night in May.

As Nick's Tweet states, we don't have office tours... sorry.
